2019.11.22 19:51 Hispanicatthedisco Better Know the Ballot #2: Brad Penny

Welcome back to Better Know the Ballot! The 2020 Hall of Fame ballot includes 18 first time players. Some are future Hall of Famers, some are absolute garbage and most of them, one way or another, will be off the ballot in one year. We're looking at all of them, from the bottom up. Brad Penny pitched like old people fuck. He might occasionally get the job done, but he was probably going to break a hip in the process.
But before we get into the hilarious train wreck that was Brad Penny’s career, I want to take a moment and appreciate Penny’s Hall of Fame-worthy dedication to being the dumbest looking motherfucker on the face of the planet. Look at him. That image is not a fluke. Literally every photo ever taken of Penny perfectly captures the visage of a house with nobody home. AND YET. Despite a weak jawline, double chin, dead eyes and a physique like 270 lbs of chewed bubblegum…Brad Penny can apparently get it. More on that later.
But first: Brad Fucking Penny, Major League Roster Spot Warmer.
When Major League life began for Penny, he wasn’t awful. He was never great. He could only very briefly be described as good. But there was a time when he wasn’t terrible. During his prime—2003-2007—Penny managed to compile a 62-42 record over 151 starts, good for a 3.74 FIP, 1.299 WHIP and 115 ERA+. Penny was a hard thrower (twice leading the league in average fastball velocity for starters), but never blessed with a ton of movement or deception, which always kept his strikeout numbers lower than you’d expect from a guy of his size. But while Penny spent four years being a competent starter, there were really only two points in his career when he approached anything even smelling vaguely like greatness: The first was for 12 sterling innings in the 2003 World Series, where he would limit the Yankees to just three earned runs in two starts. The second was 2007, when he would finish third in Cy Young voting, post a career best 3.03 ERA and 147 ERA+, en route to a 6 bWAR season.
But that was it. For the rest of Penny’s career, everything good in his professional life would be backed by something hilariously terrible. And most of the straight up bad things in the rest of his career would happen to Detroit.
When Penny was traded to the Dodgers in July 2004, it looked like a chance to go back to the playoffs and maybe play for another ring. He hurt his arm in the first inning of his second start. He came back from the DL in September, just in time to help with the playoff push, and reinjured himself in the third inning of his first game back.
On September 23, 2006, Penny got to etch his name into the record books, tying the Major League record by striking out four batters in one inning. But because it was Brad Penny, those four swinging Ks came sandwiched around a run scoring double and two run homer, coughing up a three run lead in the process. Penny would allow two more runs before being pulled and taking the loss. Then 2007 happened and dried up all of Penny’s karmic goodwill.
From that point on, life allowed Penny to pick one of two options: being effective, or being healthy. He was clearly allowed to switch answers from season to season, but never again were the two states of being allowed to cross streams. And sometimes, like in 2008, Penny went off-book, and opted for “none of the above.”
From 2008 to 2014, Penny would go 33-35 in 119 games, including 91 starts. He’d post an ERA+ of 80, and a WHIP of over 1.5. But his mad genius was in how judiciously he’d choose between “effective” or “healthy” from year to year. Penny worked with teams emotions the way Picasso worked with oil.
He started 2009 having chosen “healthy” and eventually getting released from Boston after going 0-4, 9.11 in his last five starts with the club. But, in a stunning exploitation of a karmic loophole, Penny abruptly switched to “effective” when he got picked up for the last six starts of the season for the Giants. He parlayed that into a one year deal with the Cardinals, but accidentally left the switch set to “effective,” and only made nine appearances, including seven Quality Starts.
He collected a $3mm check from Detroit the next season, opted to be healthy and stunk up the joint, allowing a career-high 24 homeruns on his way to a 5.02 FIP and 78 ERA+. He pitched 28 atrocious innings for the Giants the next year, but what I really want to finish on (from a baseball standpoint) is the 2013 season.
That line is missing from Penny’s Baseball Reference main page, because that’s the year Penny spent employed by the Fukuoka SoftBank Hawks. He signed a one year deal worth $3mm which, at the time, as the biggest contract for a first-year American player in JPPL history. In his first JPPL start, Penny got torched for 6 runs on 7 hits in his first three innings before suddenly claiming he was hurt and asking out of the game.
He had an MRI the next day. It was negative. He flew back to the US for a second MRI. It was negative. Penny still insisted he was hurt and refused to pitch. The Hawks released him a month later. fin
The 64 pitches of Penny’s JPPL career were later called “the worst decision in franchise history.”
But hey kids, do you know in what aspect of life Brad Penny absolutely has had a Hall of Fame career? Banging insanely hot women.
Penny dated Eliza Dushku. He dated Alyssa Milano. He was engaged to a professional dancer before eventually marrying an OKC Thunder cheerleader. So sure, I can sit here and spend 1,000 words dunking on Penny’s hilariously snake bitten career, but the dude has bedded women who turn me down in my own fantasies, so fuck ME, right?
Chances of making the Hall: Worse than my chances of finally dating a Vampire Slayer
Chances of leaving the ballot in his first year: 100%

2019.09.29 20:40 MnrGiggles Famous actors you forgot were on That 70's Show

  1. Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson
With Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson as one of the highest-paid actors in the world, and continuously pumping out blockbuster movie after blockbuster movie, it is hard to remember that his initial fame didn’t come from acting. After a brutal knee injury derailed his football career, he took to wrestling and became a WWE superstar. Believe it or not, his first ever credited acting role came in 1999 on That ’70s Show! At the height of his career in the WWE Johnson appeared, as a wrestler of course, on the episode “The Wrestling Show.” To make things even more interesting, he appeared not as himself but as his father Rocky Johnson who was a very popular wrestler in the ’70s! Although he played a wrestler, and the part didn’t demand too much actual acting skill, it is incredible to think how far Dwayne Johnson’s Hollywood career has come since that very first role.
  1. Betty White
Over the course of its many seasons, That ’70s Show saw many popular stars from former variety shows and sitcoms make a cameo, but one of the best was Betty White’s. The incredible actress is amazing in any role, big or small, and of course that is true for her recurring guest spot in the series. White first appeared in the show’s fifth season as Bea Sigurdson, the hilarious and outrageous mother of Kitty and grandmother of Eric and Laurie. White’s last appearance in the role was in season five’s “Babe I’m Gonna Leave You” after four episodes, but she still remains one of the best celebrities to cameo on the show over its 200 episode run.
  1. Lindsay Lohan
The early 2000’s were a truly golden time for many stars, especially for Lindsay Lohan. Fresh off her iconic role as Cady Heron in 2004’s Mean Girls, the popular star showed up in That ’70s Show in the season seven episode “Mother’s Little Helper.” Lohan guest-starred as Danielle, a girl who begins going to the salon that Fez works at, and of course the two begin to flirt, which played off the two star’s real-life relationship at the time. As per the course for the show, any new girl introduced became a target of competition between two of the guys, and this time Kelso also took an interest in Danielle, causing a rift between him and Fez as they competed for her attention.
  1. Billy Dee Williams
Between the show being based in the ’70s, and Eric’s obsession with Star Wars, it wasn’t surprising, but still thrilling, when beloved Star Wars actor Billy Dee Williams made a guest appearance on the show. The actor, best known for his role as Lando Calrissian in the Star Wars franchise, appeared on That ’70s Show in 2004’s season six episode, “Baby Don’t You Do It.” The actor starred in the episode as Pastor Dan who Eric and Donna go see for pre-marital counseling and lie to about having had sex before marriage. Although the cameo was for fanservice, it was truly entertaining and many were disappointed he never came back to the series.
  1. Alyson Hannigan
Eliza Dushku wasn’t the only Buffy the Vampire Slayer alum to make a guest appearance on the series! After Buffy the Vampire Slayer came to an end in 2003, Hannigan slowed down her roles and after reprising her role as Michelle in American Wedding, she showed up on That ’70s Show. She first appeared in the season six episode “Sally Simpson” as Suzy Simpson, a tomboy and fellow police cadet of Kelso’s. Although Suzy developed a crush on Kelso, he instead tried to set her up with Fez, which results in a disastrous date. She returned as Suzy in the following episode “Won’t Get Fooled Again” but after finding out Fez is in a green card marriage and Kelso had a child, she left quickly. Only one year later the actress found herself in TV stardom again after taking on the role of Lily for How I Met Your Mother.
  1. Seth Green
It may be hard to believe but Seth Green has nearly 200 acting credits to his name, and with a resume like that it is easy to forget some of his smaller roles! The actor first appeared on That ’70s Show in season six’s “The Battle of Evermore” as Mitch Miller, another guy with a huge crush on Donna but with a bad attitude. He ended up appearing in five episodes over the course of the season, and audiences were certainly not impressed by the character. While Green isn’t seen in too many roles anymore, he has been kept busy with voice acting roles including providing several voices in Robot Chicken and voicing Chris Griffin in Family Guy.
  1. Jessica Simpson
Jessica Simpson may have only dabbled in acting while focusing on her music career and her stint on reality TV, but in that time she also appeared on That ’70s Show. Back in 2002, Simpson made her first appearance in the first episode of season five as Annette, a gorgeous California girl who Kelso strikes up an interest in after he and Donna fled to California at the end of season four. She reappeared later in the season when Annette arrived in Wisconsin to visit Kelso, causing a lot of drama between him and Jackie. Her role ended in the following episode “Babe I’m Gonna Leave You” when Annette grew bored and cold in Wisconsin and was sick of Kelso’s obsession with Jackie.
  1. Luke Wilson
Luke Wilson is best known for his numerous film roles, but he has also made his way to the small screen a time or two, and had a recurring role on That ’70s Show! The popular actor first appeared on the series in the season four episode “Donna Dates a Kelso” as Michael Kelso’s older brother, Casey Kelso. Wilson ended up appearing in four season four episodes before making his return in season six’s “My Wife” and again in season seven’s “2120 So. Michigan Ave.” In Wilson’s last appearance as Casey Kelso his character revealed he was leaving to go travel India with his other brothers.
  1. Eliza Dushku
Eliza Dushku was a Hollywood chameleon during her early days in the industry. From starring alongside action star heavyweight Arnold Schwarzenegger in True Lies to rocking teen comedy in Bring It On, Dushku turned heads early, but of course her most memorable role came as Faith in Buffy the Vampire Slayer. After her role in Buffy came to an end, the actress appeared on That ’70s Show in the season seven episode “It’s All Over Now” as “Sizzling Sarah” a co-worker of Donna’s whose sexiness makes her an instant favorite at the radio station. While Dushku has continued to act, she has not reached the same level of fame the late ’90s and early 2000’s brought her. She was most recently seen in three episodes of the series Bull and in the TV movie The Saint in 2017.
  1. Bruce Willis
Bruce Willis surprised everyone with his recurring guest spot in Friends, but the iconic action star returned to TV for another surprising guest appearance in That ’70s Show. Willis made his appearance in the season eight episode “Misfire” as Vic, the security chief at the Playboy Mansion and boss of Kelso after he lands his “dream job” as security at the Playboy Mansion. Unfortunately for Willis, the cameo was marred by his character’s awful personality and even worse wig and mustache, but proved yet again that Willis enjoys taking on sitcom comedy from time to time.
  1. Amy Adams
These days, audiences are used to seeing Golden Globe-winning actress Amy Adams dominating the big screen in major roles, but in the late ’90s and early 2000’s her career was only beginning! Following her first ever role in Drop Dead Gorgeous, Adams third ever credited role was on That ’70s Show in the season two episode “Burning Down the House.” The actress starred in the episode as Kat Peterson, a classmate of the core cast and one of Jackie’s popular friends who draws the interest of many of the guys especially Hyde and Fez. Of course, Adams is no stranger to small roles on popular shows, she went on to also appear in Charmed, Buffy the Vampire Slayer and Smallville, but all of those roles are long forgotten thanks to how big her career is now.
  1. Joseph Gordon – Levitt
Joseph Gordon-Levitt has had an incredible career already, and has proven he has great range as an actor, but like so many others he got his start with small roles on television. After appearing in four episodes of Roseanne, and taking on small movie roles, he then began to break out in fame thanks to his starring role in 3rd Rock From the Sun. Thanks to 3rd Rock From the Sun and That ’70s Show sharing a production company, Gordon-Levitt made a guest appearance on the series as a popular rich kid who becomes friends with Eric named Buddy. In the end, Eric is taken by surprise when Buddy kisses him and reveals he wants to be more than friends. It was the series’ only attempt at introducing an LGBTQ character, and was one of the first times a gay male kiss appeared on primetime North American television. So, while Gordon-Levitt only appeared for one episode, he certainly made his mark.

Alex Nevil...Phillie's Waiter
Scott Haven...Cop
Kevin P. Farley...Matthew Erdman (as Kevin Farley)
Tom Kenny, he was Woofy the Mascot of Funland.
Neil Flynn (Scrubs, The Middle) as the bouncer in "The Velvet Rope"; Tom Poston (Newhart) as Kitty's dad.
The HARDY BOYS - both wrestled at the same match where the rock took on the midgets.

Make Heads Enroll

The deadline to sign up for a 2019 health plan on Healthcare.gov is Saturday. That’s TOMORROW for those of you who read this newsletter as soon as it hits your inbox. Which is all of you.
If you need health insurance next year, go to healthcare.gov and shop for a plan. Chances are you will qualify for a generous subsidy, which will make the plan you choose affordable. If you can’t enroll online, or demand causes website outages, the healthcare.gov call center will take your name and number, and you will be allowed to complete the enrollment process even after the deadline lapses. (800) 318-2596.
Why do we keep reminding you about this? Mostly because the Trump administration has taken extraordinary and immoral steps to hide the deadline from you. And that mole on your neck is weird looking and you should get it checked out.
They’ve done this for a number of reasons:
In essence, we are stepping in to do a job that your government should be doing for you. We don’t want you to go without health insurance unnecessarily, because being uninsured is extremely risky; and we don’t want Republicans to succeed at sabotaging the marketplaces, because that will hurt millions of people, and may even set back the cause of further improving American health care next time Democrats control the government.
So does that mean you can expect more servicey/annoying emails about health care around this time next year, too? That probably depends on how effective Democratic oversight proves to be in the coming months. And Trump officials are super nervous about it.
Thanks to emails Huffington Post obtained, we now know that the Trump administration knew cutting the ACA’s advertising budget by 90 percent would harm enrollment, then lied to the public about it.
On the day open enrollment began this year, Seema Verma, the Trump official in charge of administering ACA benefits, wrote a tweet literally trying to scare people out of shopping for and buying comprehensive health insurance, like the kind taxpayers provide her.
With the House soon to be in Democratic hands, Verma is singing a much different tune: “TOMORROW is the FINAL DAY to shop and enroll in a 2019 Marketplace plan. If you haven’t done so already, get to Healthcare.gov and sign up for a plan today!”
The Bottom Line: A few hours of pretending to do her job faithfully won’t erase the paper trail she and her staff left as they set about to sabotage the law. If and when Democrats bring that plot to life, Verma’s agency might shape itself up, and Democrats can insist on increasing the ACA’s outreach funding in negotiations over the federal budget. Elections have consequences, one of which is putting this sabotage behind us.

What Else

Jakelin Caal Maquin, a 7-year-old girl from Guatemala who was taken into Border Patrol custody last week after crossing into the United States from Mexico, died of dehydration and shock, reportedly after not drinking or eating for days. They killed a child. Homeland Security Secretary Kirstjen Nielsen, whose job it is to oversee Border Patrol and the well-being of the children in its custody, blamed Maquin's death on her family, saying it was “a very sad example of the dangers of this journey.” We’ve said it before, we’ll say it again—Kirstjen Nielsen is a disgrace.
Special Counsel Robert Mueller’s office has responded to President Trump’s former national security adviser Michael Flynn’s requests for leniency in sentencing by disputing Flynn’s suggestion that FBI investigators tricked him into lying: "A sitting National Security Advisor, former head of an intelligence agency, retired Lieutenant General, and 33-year veteran of the armed forces knows he should not lie to federal agents.”
Facebook says a bug exposed the public and private photos, including ones that had been uploaded but not posted, of up to 6.8 million users to developers, but don’t worry—they’re “sorry” again.
Johnson & Johnson knew for decades that its baby powder contained asbestos—a known carcinogen—but continued to insist that the product was safe for use, concealing information from the public and regulators. Big tobacco, meet big talcum powder. You’ll be great friends. Here’s hoping Goldbond secretly contains crushed up Juul.
President Trump was a primary beneficiary of the unprecedented amounts of money his inaugural committee raised and spent, including through overpayments to his Washington, DC, hotel. Ivanka Trump, who was a Trump Organization executive at the time, was reportedly in charge of negotiating the venue rental prices the hotel charged for inauguration events. At this point it’s truly impressive that one man could commit so many crimes so quickly.
The details of how actress Eliza Dushku was sexually harassed on the set of CBS’s Bull by lead actor Michael Weatherly and others, along with the $9.5 million confidential settlement she received afterwards, have become public. This latest high-profile harassment claim follows the termination of CBS’s disgraced former CEO Les Moonves.
Turns out that none of the campaign donors who asked for refunds from Sen. Cindy Hyde-Smith (R-MS), after her remarks about wanting to attend a “public hanging” became public, have received a single dime. Her campaign told at least one company (Walmart) that it did not intend to return the money.
Sen. Orrin Hatch (R-NV) regrets saying he doesn’t care if President Trump committed crimes, saying now that “no one is above the law.” Too late, dude. Enjoy retirement.
Trump has found a (temporary) chief of staff: Office of Management and Budget Director Mick Mulvaney will become the Acting Chief of Staff, according to Trump’s very trustworthy and very cool Twitter feed. That’s my Mick in a Box.

2018.12.06 12:47 QuickSpinach First time watching Buffy the Vampire Slayer

Hey all. First time posting in this sub but I thought I'll share my impressions of the show (while they are still fresh) after doing a marathon watch last couple of weeks. I've heard of Buffy before but I never really got down to watching it until last month when I have some spare time. And I got hooked immediately, one of the best series I've ever watched.

My season ranking in descending order:
  1. Season 3
  2. Season 5
  3. Season 2
  4. Season 1
  5. Season 4
  6. Season 6
  7. Season 7
Season 1: Does a great job in introducing the world of Buffy. I immediately love the mixture of comedy and horror, the characters and the high school setting. I love the Scoobies, the friendships they formed and I love seeing them navigating the horrors of high school and vampire slaying together. Another plus is that I get a kick out of seeing the 90s fashion and those giant computer monitors back then.

Season 2: The first half of the show seems like an extension of season 1 but with some character growth for the characters. I love Willow so I am glad that she found a guy who notice and appreciate her. I like Oz as well. Angel's sudden change was a huge shock but definitely kicked the tension up dramatically. I like Jenny Calendar so I am sad when she died. The ending where Angel was re-soul but Buffy had to kill him anyway was very sad too. But all in all I think the ending is fitting and the season as a whole is great.

Season 3: It started out angst-filled but this season has so many great episodes I want to re-watched all of them immediately. I think the Scoobies friendships are at their strongest this season. I didn't like Faith when she was introduced and her arc this season but Eliza Dushku managed to infuse the character with enough vulnerability to make me sympathize with her a bit. The mayor I think may be my favorite villain in the series, he is both funny and threatening and somehow it is hard to really dislike him.

Season 4: Watching this season straight after the high of season 3 is quite jarring. I understand that the Scoobies are now in college and so things will be different but the entire season I really miss watching the Scoobies hanging out and doing stuff together. Like when Superstar start off with the Scoobies fighting the vampires together I was cheering and was like "Finally the gang is back together". Too bad it turned out to be a fake-reality episode. Still there a few outstanding episodes and the show keeps most of its humor intact. I like Riley, he is a really a decent guy and was there to support and appreciate Buffy. Willow break-up with Oz and suddenly turned lesbian and dating Tara was a surprise for me. I was like "huh? okay.. fine.." Xanda/Anya romance may be my favorite this season, I didn't like Anya at first but she really grows on me later on. Ending is awesome, love that matrix like fight where Buffy blocks all the bullets and turns the missile into doves. Also love the Scoobies group hug while they are entering the Initiative. BTW, didn't like the Initiative storyline.

Season 5: This season I was happy that the Scoobies are close and hanging out together again. You can really feel that their relationship have transcended from friendship into family. Glory I thought was too over the top at first but I kinda like her eventually. In the end, she is an effective villain. I think no other villain manages to frighten Buffy as much as Glory does. Dawn is annoying and her first appearance was so abrupt that it took me some time to come around to the idea that Buffy now has a little sister. Willow gets to kick ass this season which trills me. I love how her magic improves by leaps and bounds this season; and how at the end she is able to somewhat hold her own against Glory and can create barrier spells to protect everybody while they are on the run.

Season 6: I really don't like how dark and gloomy this season is. Spuffy masochistic sexual relationship is off-putting to me, as well as Spike attempted rape. I don't know how others view their relationship but I find it neither hot nor sexy. Which is a pity because I thought Sarah Michelle Gellar and James Marsters has great chemistry (they are hilarious in Something Blue) but this season sours their relationship for me. Willow's magic addiction story was so heavy handed in their drug metaphor that I just want to roll my eyes. I finally like Tara this season (was charmed by her singing in Once More with Feeling) so I was quite sad when she was killed so randomly and senselessly. Before this season I was already spoiled regarding the Dark Willow arc so I wasn't really surprised when it happens. But I was startled when she flays the man alive. Still Dark Willow or not I love to see Willow kick ass so the last few episodes are a highlight for me. I think they should have spent more time on this arc though. Like Willow switch to villain started off with just seeking revenge, but finally decide to end the world because she got overdosed on all the empathy magic and wants to end all suffering. This series of events was just so rushed that we do not have enough time to really understand and process why Willow wants to destroy the world. Love Xandar yellow crayon speech at the end. Love how Willow was finally stopped not by force nor by magic but by the love of her best friend.

Season 7: This season is just lame. Season 6 at least has some highlights to offset the gloominess but this season just seems to get progressively bad towards the end. It did started off okay, and I like Same Time Same Place where Willow was reconciled with her friends. But the show went rapidly downhill once the Potentials arrive and then for no reason decide to stick a new love interest on Willow (WHY???). I don't know how Kennedy was received when the show aired but I will prefer that the show focus more on Willow's redemption arc. Then not much action, a lot of talking and brooding around and too many new characters which I don't really care about. I think if the Potentials have been introduced in earlier seasons I will be more receptive of them but with the end coming I am impatient for the show to focus more on the Scoobies and for them to have a big reconciliation scene where they show how much they love one another despite their fights and their mistakes along the way. But that big scene never come to my disappointment. Look back on this season, I think the quality of the writing really dropped compared to season 1-5. My impression is that the writer has already decided on a big LOTR battle scene at the end and planned some big moments in between the arrival of the Potential and the end, but the plot does not flow organically. Also slightly annoyed at how the show keeps trying to paint Buffy as a self-sacrificing martyr who has to carry the weight of the world alone on her shoulder; and tries to make everybody looks bad to contrast how self-sacrificing Buffy is. At one point Spike tears into the others and reminds them of how many times Buffy has saved them etc. Which is true, Buffy did save people many times and make many sacrifices but the show sort of forgot that her friends have saved her many times as well. And most of the big bad from previous seasons are defeated through combined efforts of the Scoobies, not just Buffy alone. And to me that is really the message sent by the show in the earlier seasons, that the real strength of the Slayer comes from her friends and the reason why Buffy managed to stay alive for so long was because of her support network which other slayers does not have. I am okay when the show wants to emphasize Buffy's heroism and sacrifice. She did sacrifice a lot. I just wish that the show will acknowledge the contributions and heroism of the others as well. All the main characters lost something by the end. Giles lost Jenny Calender. Willow lost Tara, Xandar lost his eyes, Anya lost her life. All gave up a normal life to follow Buffy and fight the good fight. The ending is lame with no emotional payoff.

Above my initial impressions upon watching the show. I might change my mind upon re-watch. Maybe I will check out the comics. I hope they are good.

2017.01.07 01:49 3raserE Rewatching Season 3

Next week will be crazy for for me, so I’m putting the rewatch on a brief pause for now. I wanted to write this up and get it out beforehand, so it’s a little rushed. I have to say I liked Season 3 more this time than I did originally, although it felt a bit frustrating sometimes. So! The third season.
Strengths
-The season opener is one of my personal favorite episodes in the series.
-The stretch of episodes from Lovers Walk to Helpless (except Gingerbread) was excellent.
-Giles got to cut loose.
-Consistency.
-There are only 2 times (late S3 and the Angel episode “Sanctuary”) where 3 of my favorite characters share the screen--Buffy, my favorite from Buffy, Wes, my favorite from Angel, and Faith, my favorite recurring. (Technically Illyria is a regular, even though she only has 8 episodes, so she doesn’t count as recurring.)
-When Wesley first introduced himself in “Bad Girls” I had a flash-forward of 5 seasons of tragedy and started sobbing during the funniest scene of the episode.
-Faith and the Mayor’s relationship is great. It humanizes the Big Bad and draws something intriguing out of Faith. He was the first man to ever accept her as a human being. And poor Faith got lost.
-Faith. I love Faith. Almost entirely because of her arc on Angel, but it’s still nice to see her. I can’t confirm it one way or the other, but I think Faith was sexually abused as a kid. It’s not just her promiscuity or her use-em-and-lose-em mentality. It’s the association of sex with violence, the pleasure she takes in hurting vampires (which could also be from Kakistos and her Watcher), the hints about her home life, how quickly she turns to trying to sexually assault Xander in “Consequences,” and especially her sexualization of older men--not just the Mayor, but Giles as well. It’s like she convinces herself she wants them so that it’ll hurt less. I may be reading too deeply into it, but what I saw deeply disturbed me.
Weaknesses
-Faith. She’s both a strength and a weakness. I love the character. But I thought the writing this season (and from what I remember, in Season 7 too) didn’t afford her the nuance she deserves. There were exceptions, little details here and there, but it wasn’t enough. It’s not the fault of the actress at all. Truthfully, I think it’s the show. Buffy is a show about good and evil. It doesn’t have room for shades of gray. Angel, with its noir elements, cast of broken characters, and focus on redemption, was the kind of place she could fit in. (Part of me wishes she came to Angel Season 5 instead of Spike. If she had, she could’ve been one of the top 5 characters in the Buffyverse. It could also have gone horribly wrong, but hey.)
-Xander from “Dead Man’s Party” to “The Wish” was utterly infuriating. I try not to hate Xander but sometimes that’s hard.
-The Willow/Xander fling felt so forced and out of character, to the severe detriment of the show.
-Lack of communication. Much of the season, especially the first third, isolated Buffy from her friends. Try as she might, she couldn’t repair the rift when no one on the other side was willing to go halfway. It hurt, probably in part because I related. I put this as a weakness because it didn’t quite feel earned here, even with Buffy’s summer in LA. The Scoobies came off as uncharacteristically callous, self-centered, and not at all empathetic in the early season. No one even bothered to give her sympathy or understand her, and it really bothered me.
-The Mayor may be my least favorite Big Bad. The germaphobic family man shtick may be fun, but it’s not intimidating at all. At least when Faith crossed over she made him more interesting, but it’s not enough for me. He doesn’t feel like a threat until he attacks an unconscious Buffy in the last episode. It was a great scene, but too little, too late. I know he’s fairly popular but he does nothing for me.
-Partially as a consequence, the season arc has less emotion and weight behind it. Season 2 didn’t have the consistency of Season 3, but it was searing when it had to be. There were a handful of episodes where I felt a bit of a gut punch (Anne, Lovers Walk, The Wish, Amends, Helpless) and one that was beautiful (The Prom), but it didn’t compare to Season 2 at its best. And at the end of the day, it's that kind of raw emotion that I come to Buffy for.
Overall
Season 3 was a pleasure to watch. I want to be clear about that, because the “Weaknesses” section looks pretty long. Individually, many of the episodes were easily 8/10s. (Genuinely 8/10, not 8/10 on the imdb scale where even “Go, Fish” gets a 6.8.) The arc never quite solidified as anything much more than passable, which was disappointing.
The thing about storytelling is that so much comes down to the antagonist. For an antagonist to be truly great, he or she can’t just be scary, although it helps. The antagonist needs to draw something out of the hero, pushing them to the edge to see what they’re made of when hard choices must be made. To some degree, they need to reflect something within the hero. The Master draws out Buffy’s fiercely independent streak and resistance to hierarchical authority. The prophecy that she’ll die at his hand is perfect because it pushes Buffy so far out of her comfort zone that we see what’s underneath. Ditto for Angelus. Glory is the embodiment of Slayer power without humanity, which is thematically resonant herself. But even she works first and foremost as Buffy’s antagonist because she threatens Buffy’s family. Faith arguably is a reflection of Buffy, but the Mayor isn’t. He doesn’t bring anything out of her that we couldn’t see with any other villain. He may be a fun character, but I don’t think he’s a good antagonist.
I hope it doesn’t seem like I gave the season an unduly hard time. It’s far from my favorite, but I did try to be fair. If you think I missed something important, I’d love to hear about it in the comments.
Episode-by-Episode Verdict
Anne: This is my favorite season opener, with the possible exception of Bargaining in Season 6. I love the acting, the writing, the story of Lily and the hell dimension, and the follow-through from Becoming. On top of all that, I love how this episode feels. The use of color, the look of LA, the pacing. It very narrowly missed the season’s top 5.
Dead Man’s Party: My verdict...Buffy’s in the right; Joyce’s concerns are mostly understandable, sympathetic, and valid; Willow isolates Buffy unfairly--I understand to a degree, but she’s in the wrong; Oz and Cordelia (and really all the Scoobies, but especially Oz) are uncharacteristically not understanding; Xander’s a complete ass with no regard for anyone but himself and don’t I just hate him here.
There’s a 10-second scene early on in DMP. In Giles’ apartment, when Buffy first says hello to him. He goes into the kitchen and leans against a cupboard. Doesn’t say a word. Go watch that again. It’s some of the best wordless acting in the whole damn show.
Faith, Hope, and Trick: I love Faith. I really do. Outside of Joss-written episodes, I found her more compelling as the poor, damaged loner than as the evil damaged loner. I always take Buffy’s side, so the first time I watched this I didn’t give Faith a chance either. Now, I was just pissed at how all the Scoobies ignored Buffy. Faith was just trying to be friendly; it’s their fault this whole thing happened.
Beauty and the Beasts: the MotW is a cheap PSA, which I never like. I remembered this as being my least favorite episode, and I hadn’t watched it since the first time. I was pleasantly surprised to see that everything outside the Jekyll/Hyde guy was very good.
Homecoming: This episode catches all the flaws of pre-Lovers Walk Season 3, and I really don’t like it. Buffy isolated from her friends is one of the toughest things to see. In later seasons it works beautifully, because it’s valid. In Homecoming, it just frustrates me. And the whole XandeWillow affair seems rushed, out-of-character (for Willow, anyway), and pretty unpleasant. Plus, Scott Hope.
Band Candy: Really, really funny. Joyles is my ship.
Revelations: One of my favorite subtle character details. When Mrs. Post visits Faith’s motel, she calls it “Spartan,” but Faith doesn’t know what that means. When Buffy visits at the end of the episode, Faith refers to the place as “real Spartan.”
Lovers Walk: I use Spike’s “Love isn’t brains, children” speech when I want to hook new viewers on Buffy. Fantastic episode.
The Wish: Excellent. It was a gut punch to see Buffy die. She actually dies 4 times in the series, technically. Nightmares, Prophecy Girl, The Wish, The Gift. (N.B. This is in Joss’s personal top 10. I think it’s the only one on the list that he didn’t write.)
Amends: aka Angel episode 0. I loved it.
Gingerbread: Even when Season 3 is bad, it’s decent. Quality-wise it’s probably #22 of the season, but I still had fun watching it.
Helpless: My one qualm is that Giles’s early actions are implausible. Not impossible, but I’m not sure whether he’d go along with that at this point. But the performances in this episode are outstanding. Buffy especially, but Giles, Cordelia, Angel, even Joyce. And the vampire! Kralik is a top-5 Monster of the Week. (My list, for those curious: The Gentlemen, Sweet, Kralik, the After Life demon, and the demon from “Same Time, Same Place”)
The Zeppo: I still had a residual hatred of Xander weighing this episode down, but it was fun. Not outstanding, but interesting.
Bad Girls: Based on writing, acting, or directing, it’s probably not the worst episode of the season. But I ranked it as such anyway, because I think it failed. First off, the “bad girl” turn from Buffy goes from 0 to 60 in about ten minutes. It’s the polar opposite of how she was in “Helpless.” It needed to stretch over a few episodes at least to be effective, because I just didn’t buy it! Second, Faith. Faith is my 3rd favorite character on Angel, and she appears in 6 episodes. Eliza Dushku is perfect for Faith when the writing supports her. I don’t feel for her in “Bad Girls.” I don’t feel sorry for her at all, and I don’t feel connected to her. So I consider that a failure of the writing. The Season 2 equivalent to “Bad Girls”/”Consequences” is Surprise/Innocence, which is done so much better. It’s an example of what “Bad Girls” could have been. In light of that, I gave it a thumbs-down.
Consequences: It’s good, but it needs to be more. I just need one moment of vulnerability from Faith to make her more than Buffy’s shadow self. Or alternatively, for Faith to get better writing. Her “justification” might be more effective if it weren’t the same thing repeated a dozen times.
Doppelgangland: So. Much. Fun. Passion of the Nerd’s review is excellent; watch it if you haven’t already.
Enemies: Not a fan of twists, but I enjoyed this one more than I expected.
Earshot: I have really mixed feelings about this. It’s mostly really strong, but the ending with the lunch lady was so bad. So, so bad.
Choices: “You. All of you. Why couldn't you be dealing drugs like normal people?” Gotta love Snyder. Also, this shows a very different Willow, changed from the events of Doppelgangland. It’s probably the first time I take the Mayor seriously as the Big Bad. Not great this late in the season, but still a good hour.
The Prom: Just getting it out of the way--Giles is magnificent. Absolutely perfect. Xander and Cordelia are also excellent, and even Wesley pulls off tolerable. But we know who the star is, and she’s radiant.
Graduation Day, Part 1: This is why I love Faith. In this one, she’s a star. Credit also to Xander, continuing his streak of not being a jerk and actually having my favorite line in the episode.* Oz and Willow are adorable. The Buffy/Faith fight scene is one of my favorites in the series so far.
Graduation Day, Part 2: It’s not Becoming, Part 2, but it’s good. The two instances when the Mayor’s facade slips are the only two times he felt genuinely scary, but they’re outstanding. There’s a line in his standoff with Angel in the hospital when he calls Buffy Angel’s whore. It’s got to be the only time he curses and it floored me. I loved the dream sequence, loved the student army twist, loved the CGI snake effect. This was a much bigger battle that felt much less personal than the end of Becoming, but that’s OK.
Season 3’s 5 Best (and 1 Worst) episodes
(upgraded from top 3)
1) The Prom
2) Graduation Day, Parts 1 & 2
3) Helpless
4) Amends
5) Doppelgangland
22) Bad Girls
9 Best (and 3 Worst) Overall
1) Becoming, Part 2
2) Innocence
3) Prophecy Girl
4) The Prom
5) I Only Have Eyes for You
6) Passion
7) Graduation Day
8) Helpless
9) Amends
54) Some Assembly Required
55) I, Robot...You Jane
56) Teacher’s Pet
To be absolutely clear, these rankings are 100% subjective. It has nothing to do with quality; it’s about how much I loved it.
Best S3 Episode for Each Character
Buffy: Helpless
Xander: The Prom*
Willow: Doppelgangland
Cordelia: The Prom
Angel: Amends
Faith: Graduation Day, Part 1
Joyce: Dead Man’s Party
Oz: Amends
Snyder: Band Candy
The Mayor: Graduation Day, Part 2
Wesley: Choices
*Xander’s behavior was so self-centered and unpleasant in early Season 3 that I considered not giving him a “Best Episode” at all. I went back on that because he’s just so good in The Prom and Graduation Day, but he seriously pissed me off this season.
Season Premieres Ranked
I’m not directly ranking season finales, because (a) they’re all top 20, and (b) that’s a minefield.
Anne (3) > When She Was Bad (2) > Welcome to the Hellmouth/The Harvest (1)

2 > 3 > 1

Floppy-Haired Douchebag Counter
Or, Buffy has terrible taste in men
-Only Scott Hope this season, but he had the douchiness of 10 men.
Evil MacGuffins That Turn Out to Be Kinda Unimpressive
None! It’s a real sign of improvement in the writing that they didn’t need to rely on foretold nights of evil and whatnot to tell a story. Anything you could arguably call a MacGuffin this season (like the Box of Gavrock, for example) had an actual role to play.
Phallic Monsters
Jack O’Toole (3.13, The Zeppo) (I challenge you to come up with a more phallic name.)
Xander’s Car (3.13, The Zeppo) (Technically not a villain, but even Buffy calls it a penis metaphor. And the size of those fins and that color blue? Monstrous.)
Olvikan/The Ascended Mayor (3.22, Graduation Day Part 2)
Giles Knockout Counter
Witch (Season 1)
Never Kill a Boy on the First Date
The Pack
Out of Mind, Out of Sight
Prophecy Girl
When She Was Bad (Season 2)
Inca Mummy Girl
Bad Eggs
Passion
Becoming
Beauty and the Beasts (Season 3)
Homecoming
Revelations
The Wish
Gingerbread
Season Total: 5 (23% of episodes)
Series Total: 15 (27% of episodes)
Ripper Sightings
Band Candy
Helpless (threatening Quentin)
Bad Girls (Cracking jokes in the face of torture)
Graduation Day (stabbing the Mayor and then blowing up a building)
Giles’ Best Moments (of Season 3)
1) Dead Man’s Party (the wordless scene I mentioned in the ep verdict)
2) The Prom (Every moment at the dance itself. Beaming when Buffy won, and speaking with her at the end.)
3) Helpless (taking care of the injured Buffy and sticking up for her)
4) The Prom (knowing without being told that Angel broke up with Buffy)
5) Collectively, all the times he made fun of Wesley
Who deserves to be re-hired?
Giles deserves to be re-hired.

2016.04.25 17:03 RabidNinja64 Why the final season of Banshee is letting me down.

SPOILERS AHEAD FOR THOSE WHO AREN'T UP TO DATE.
Now, I LOVE this show, more-so than Walking Dead, Breaking Bad, all the AAA shows that we've come to know, love and becoming enthralled in (Game of Thrones still keeping strong!), and Banshee is no exception, but with the final season kicking off April, I can't help but feel a tad disappointed in the sequence thus far (3 Episodes in).
Firstly, the fact that the show kicks off with Hood doing absolutely next to nothing to save Job over a course of 2 years, except becoming a Forest Hobo, with an almighty beard, I might add, doesn't seem like his character; The very first episode of Season 1, He tracked down Job just to find Carrie the instant he got out of prison, on the basis of Love. Job should be no different in a no-homo best-friend relation. I understand Hood's affliction with the aspect that their rescue raid in the previous season got Gordon killed, which affected Carrie dramatically, but she should've been his focus, considering he also lost Siobhan, there in the same boat, but nobody thought to add 2 and 2 together.
Secondly, Although Rebecca's death was a good curveball for the season, the fact that they downplayed it to a Demonic cult seems.....rushed and not thought through. There was no essence of a cult whatsoever prior to the 2-year jump, or even before. (Quick thought: It was hinted previously when Rebecca nearly got Kidnapped, which wasn't touched upon as a cult til now) What would've made more sense is using the Neo-Nazi construct that has been a constant presence since the beginning and ending it with them. Instead, we get a horny "possessed" couple found on PlentyofFish that enjoys reruns of Silence of The Lambs, naked bodies and playing in their victims blood, using their hearts as Air Hockey pucks while blasting Kids by MGMT.
Besides, Wasnt the final season meant to be played upon with Hood's identity being found out? Not playing Guess Who with Buffalo Bill?
Along with the investigation, I also want to point out another annoying aspect: JESSICA FUCKING JONES. UNACCEPTABLE. (EDIT: She's actually Eliza Dushku and NOT Krysten Ritter, so any points made past this point are moot, but i like how it's worded, so it's being kept)
She's already "Edgy" enough as it is in the weak-willed Daredevil adaptation but c'mon, keep that shit where it is, not have her investigative crime-fighting "skills" go cross-country. Though she plays 2 sides of a coin being a burnt out crack addict FBI agent, It's just....crap. It's the last season of 8 episodes, We don't need a new character that somehow pertains to the show's dark concept when the show is dark in itself with Proctor still looming his dark shadow over the town.
As for Carrie/Anna, it was a welcome sight to see her essentially switch between the two characters prior to this, but, with the hidden gun rack (On a motherfucking tumbler set!), Her Anastasia counterpart is locked away and only in use on the night shift, not effectively making her a superhero, but moreover giving her a reason to NOT be bored in the rest of the time of her becoming a better mother....oh wait!
Other than that, another 4 episodes, which, fingers crossed, pick up the essence of what Banshee used to be as a dark, gritty, action-packed and otherwise fun and humorous show, and not just give us a Hannibal-style ending.

2015.04.21 01:28 tabledresser [Table] IAmA: I am Joe Lynch, director of EVERLY with Salma Hayek, KNIGHTS OF BADASSDOM, WRONG TURN 2, the TV show HOLLISTON, the MOVIE CRYPT podcast, and my disgusting story on the Nerdist podcast. Let's AMA this!

Questions Answers
Let's say that hypothetically, a director has his (or her) movie taken from him during editing. How much would this change the final product? There is only so much footage to work with, so wouldn't the basic story have to be the same if re-shoots are not done? You would think right? But having it happen to me, I quickly found out that a LOT can change. In KoB for example, let's say we have 3-4 takes of Steve Zahn & Ryan Kwanten talking. I picked the 4th take of Steve and the 3rd take of Ryan, where both were to me on-point and hitting all the beats. That's the assembly of my decisions in the post room affecting the scene. In the version I did not cut, and Im not being exact here, but they chose the 1st take of Zahn and the 4th take of Kwanten. Why? Well, I wish I could tell you, but choices like that are what make movies work even on the smallest level. So while you might not think there's much to work with, everything is highly manipulatable and can many times make or break a moment dramatically or even a joke's timing. THAT's my biggest fault of the current cut of KoB; its not just that they took out the original ending and chintz'd on the VFX; its compromising a lot of dramatic and comedic moments with the actors by using different takes and styles of editing. But again, who am I to judge? People really dig the movie and Im thrilled its getting a fan base. But to me, the director should at least be in the edit to keep the integrity of the acting that she or he worked with on set with the actors. The actors trust the director (hopefully) so its their necks on the line too.
Thank you so much for this candid and descriptive answer. It's insight like this that make me love the Movie Crypt podcast. No worries! Thanks for stopping by!
When it came to Wrong Turn 2 was it easy to work with all the fucked up-ness of like cannibalism and what not or was it a weird concept to get your head around? Like i figure as a director you have to deal with many different concepts but was it out of your comfort zone professionally? I hate to confess this but nothing about WRONG TURN 2 scared me; not the cannibalism, not the incest, not the general "FUCKED UP YO!" nature of it. Maybe that's because I had on SALO or CANNIBAL HOLOCAUST on a loop as a kid? (I kid). I guess I was seeing it from a different angle and my goal with that one was to make the sequel a little more fun, which was the sugar to make the medicine go down. When we first showed my cut to Fox, they HATED it. They said "What is this??" I said "Well, this movie is ALIENS if the first WRONG TURN was ALIEN. This one is the fun, fucked up roller coaster ride with more action and some laughs where the first one is dark and uncompromising..." and you know what? Not one change. So its all about context. The only thing that's taken me out of my comfort zone was ALL in EVERLY; Sexual assault, the loss of children, animal violence...but let me say that that dog in EVERLY (which was named Banzai a a tribute to my dog who died while I was shooting it) DESERVED to get blown up, he was an asshole who was trying to hurt that poor little girl! So With EVERLY I was battling a lot of things out of my comfort zone. By comparison, WT2 was a walk in the park!
Thanks for doing an AMA, loved the holy hell out of EVERLY! What music, if any, do you like to listen to while you write? and what're you working on next? Thanks so much Bubba! I ALWAYS listen to music when Im writing or doing anything creative. I grew up with movies in my heart and on my mind as a baby so I thought real life had music scores! I usually listen to movie scores like THE LAST OF THE MOHICANS, SCHINDLER'S LIST, ASSAULT ON PRECINCT 13 (among other Carpenter faves) & of course most of Bear McCreary's scores like BSG. Lately when I was prepping and shooting EVERLY I got WAY into dubstep (stop laughing, its also awesome to edit to) so I was listening almost exclusively to Excision which is just like Transformers farting but I loved it. That's where the dub-esque moment in EVERLY pops up! But yeah I love music, from scores to needle drops and it always informs my work, which is why you hear things like "My Blue Heaven" playing during the Sex Zombie orgy scene in CHILLERAMA.
PS: I have a few things cooking but right now we're casting our new Sci-Fi thriller SWITCH CULTURE, which is insane (as you'd expect probably). There's a few other things too but don't want to jinx it!
Have you listened to Carpenter's new album? LOST THEMES? Hell yes! I want to do music videos for every one of them!
Hello! Just want to wax your car a bit and say how much I loved Wrong Turn 2 and I love the Movie Crypt! I love all your stuff and I'm a currently waiting until May for the UK release of Everly so I can watch the fuck out of it in the theatre! My question is about your writing process: how do you go from the initial ideas stage to having a finished draft? Do you do treatments and how much planning do you do for your films? Thanks very much and bring on Everly! Hey! Please, wax away, my jalopy is pretty dull at the moment! ;) To answer your question, I always do a treatment; it helps me figure out the basic story and because I started writing in prose form as a kid (in my half hearted attempt to be Stephen King, Skip & Spector or Clive Barker) its more natural for me to tell it more like a bedtime/campfire story. Plus a treatment is easy to interject as you go as I usually do a version with everything and then edit and add at will till I know all the dots are connected. Once you know your beginnings, middles and ends, at least for me, its a lot easier to start adding it as a script, including dialogue. As for planning...well as they say, "60% of a movie is in pre-production", which is a very fair percentage...maybe 50% if we're being honest here. Prepping any shoot is integral so things are on-set, people are on-point and know the task at hand, etc. But you ALSO need to know that while you can prep incessantly and think you got shit locked down...it NEVER goes like that. You have to be open to collaboration, compromise and the art of the "Happy Accident". Once you can balance the two, you're in Cinema Zen.
Wrong Turn 2 was one of the most successful straight to DVDs of 2007, and my personal favorite after the original. Is there anything you'd redo or change if you hade the chance to now? Hey thanks! Im really proud of WT2, especially that it even got made under the studio's nose AND it still does great! If I was to change ANYTHING, aside from having a few more takes here or a better day of weather there, it would be the beginning. Now, NO OFFENSE to my girl Kim Caldwell who (literally) killed it, but my original idea was to bring back The DUSH, Eliza Dushku, which was ACTUALLY being discussed when I got the job but at the las minute she bailed. The idea was that she was going to PLAY HERSELF as the celeb in this reality show, The Apocalypse, and of course, get split down the middle in the opening scene by Three Finger. It was a definite Meta moment and my way of saying "This aint the original WRONG TURN!" This was in good ole' 2007 when "Meta" wasn't as cool to do I guess and while the studio was game (why not? It got her back for a cameo) she wasn't into it. I just think that would have been a hell of a misdirect right out of the gate. But hey, that's me nitpicking. All Hail WT2!
How did you pitch EVERLY? After Yale and I worked on the script, it was our producer Luke who asked if I could do a "fake trailer" or "ripomatic" to let readers know what kind of movie we were making tonally and stylistically. So I cut a fake trailer using clips from everything from BARTON FINK, THE PROFESSIONAL, BARAKA, SAFE HOUSE, SONATINE, etc where I used specific moments to make it feel like an original trailer. Luke then sent THAT out and if people were enticed, then they read the script. That's how it got in front of enough execs and producers to get it on the Black List in 2010. So even before I went in the room to discuss the script, they had a visual idea of what I was going for. Then I would go in and say "It's one room! We can shoot this anywhere, even Tim Buk Tu!" Didn't think they'd actually send me halfway around the world to shoot it! So advice: When they ask where you want to shoot...say Maui.
Why do the whole film in one room? Because the character is trapped in the room, I wanted the audience to be STUCK with her, to feel the sense of desperation, the tension of "who's coming through that door next?" and the claustrophobia of her surroundings to envelop the audience too. It's a bit "Dogma 95" where Lars and co. had "rules" which limited them in certain respects with the storytelling narrative but in other ways it was freeing. Having this rule (which my DP Steve and I called "Dawgma 13" (say that with a Brooklyn accent for maximum impact) forced us as filmmakers also to keep the viewer interested while the movie unfolded, which led to some cool ways to shoot action you might not expect. So it was both for thematic reasons and for technical reasons we thought this was a cool idea, very much like Linklater's TAPE (but with more guns).
How do you determine what films are "appropriate" to show your sons? Also, which of your films do you think you will show them first? Xoxo, BJ Hi BJ! I mentioned this before but when it comes to violence, since he's been watching STAR WARS since he was like 1 1/2 (please don't take us away Child services...) the level of violence in that movie has been kind of a comparison for other movies to consider. Boobs? As long as it's not porn (shocking I know) we're much more lax with that stuff because we should never censor the beauty of the human body. In terms of MY movies? OOF. I think I'll start him off with my segment of CHILLERAMA since he's in it so he might get a kick out of it (Or hate me forever) and since that one, while extremely violent, is in the Joe Dante vein of fun violence, and I think the ending is kinda sweet. He might like KoB but I wonder if he'll just ask me editing questions and horror stories from the set. Then WT2...EVERLY I'll wait till he's 30.
Do you have any advice on set control? Rely on your 1st AD, he is there for you (or at least till the end of the day when the producers are telling him-to you-to HTFU). Also I like keeping a fun set so I will likely play music, keep things light. Finally, don't be a screamer. Those who think that screaming and kicking shit to get their way is not going to get respect of the crew. I try to NOT scream so that the rare times I do justifiably have to lose my cool a bit, everyone shuts the fuck up and listens. Oh...and know your crew's names! From the top down, even down to the drivers. You say "Hey Bill" or "Good morning Shelia" to people who think they are insignifigant members of the crew, everyone feels important and you'll have a happy, productive crew who will help you get your shots.

2015.02.11 20:32 gbinasia Rupaul's Drag Race Walkthrough (to Narnia), Season 4 Episode 2.

Hey, so I occasionally have some time and decided to make my episodes rewatch productive for dragkind, so I made this. It's basically a guide to pop culture references in RPDR and some pun explanations for those who aren't native English-speakers. I started with the first episode from Season 4 two weeks ago, since that's the episode that got me hooked on RPDR and it's also written in a way that is best for 1st time viewers. Now's episode episode 2 from season 4, with untucked!
Let me know if you like it and I'll do the other ones! Or we could collaborate so it can be done superfast for all seasons. Also asking for help for the few obscure references I didn't catch.
Ep. 1 from Season 4 is here.
01:33 - S4 is the only season where eliminated contestants reappear holding the cash prize cheque they lost.
02:00 - Sharon says cluck cluck ladies, might be a reference to the Chicken Lady from Kids in the Hall but not sure. Help?
03:11 - I've come to pump you up may be a reference to Pumping Up with Hans and Franz, a famous SNL skit.
03:18 - Pummel also means punching.
03:20 - "Necessary Roughness" is a reference to the penalty in American football called "Unnecessary Roughness."
04:43 - Is Latrice actually Polynesian?
05:10 - Shake it don't break it might be a reference to 2 Live Crew's Pop that Coochie song.
05:30 - RuPaul's 'Make it pop' would make sense with the earlier 2 Live Crew reference.
05:32 - Hips Don't Lie is a famous Shakira song.
05:36 - Can I get some fries with that shake? is probably a reference to George Clinton's Do Fries Go With That Shake song (1986).
05:41 - Willam's wig in this challenge is now his signature merch logo.
05:57 - RuPaul's 'Ass everywhere!' is a shout out to his friend Big Freedia's song of the same name.
06:06 - Sassy the Assassin is a notorious butt model.
06:38 - The WTF is a play on the WWF, the World Wrestling Federation and the acronym for 'what the fuck'.
07:00 - Flexing your charisma, uniqueness, nerve and talent means is a play on flexing your cunt.
08:03 - Jiggly is mimicking a sumo wrestler.
08:25 - Heels and Faces are indeed terms used in wrestling to describe Villains and Heroes.
11:30 - Jiggly is shouting Brooklyn, New York because that's where she is from.
14:00 - Ru insists a lot on the 'Luscious ladies of the WTF'. It's probably a take on G.L.O.W., the Glamourous Ladies of Wrestling.
14:27 - Rick Fox is Vanessa Williams's ex-husband and also dated Eliza Dushku for 5 years. Both women were guest judges on Season 3 on separate episodes.
14:29 - John Salley appeared previously on a celeb special of The Weakest Link with RuPaul. He was the first one out and actually voted RuPaul as the weakest link.
18:15 - Dida and Willam are quoting Venus Extravaganza's 'reading' in Paris is Burning.
18:36 - Jiggly is saying she got kicked out of school by Willam and Dida, who 'saw her in Coach Carter's office'; it's likely a reference to the movie Coach Carter, a movie about a coach who benched his team because of poor academic results.
19:00 - Willamila Hater is a reference to Ugly Betty's Whilelmina Slater, played by guest judge's Rick Fox's ex-wife Vanessa Williams.
19:15 - Jujubee was a slimmer Asian contestant on Season 2.
20:30 - 'Scratch snatch fever' is what's censored.
21:19 - The audience is clearly made up of staff members. You can see at that time a producer Willam had a Facebook fight with last year in the crowd in a pink wig.
22:00 - Kirstie Alley branded is an actress with constant weight struggles.
22:42 - Dida yells Ms. Cheesecake, something that will stick with her for the show. As per Paris is Burning, Ms. Cheesecake means means that you must not only have a body, but you must also be sexy.
24:56 - A tag team is also a term often used in porn for threesomes.
25:00 - A full Nelson is a wrestling move, and an innuendo for a fully erect dick, a pun reinforced by the multitude of phallic Nelson's columns around the English-speaking world.
25:01 - Michelle's necklace spells 'werk', a drag term brought to mainstream by RuPaul in the song 'Supermodel (You betta werk!'
25:20 - BK is slang for Brooklyn.
25:51 - Pink Monday is a pun on Pink Friday, an album from Nicki Minaj. She used to sport a look similar to what Kenya is wearing.
25:59 - Mary-Kate Minaj refers to Mary-Kate Olsen and Nicki Minaj.
26:24 - I'm not too sure about the Rockettes sisters reference. Help?
26:56 - A quinceanara is a celebration of a girl's 15th birthday in most Spanish-speaking communities.
27:00 - London, Paris and Milan are all fashion capitals. It's a set-up to insert the 'I see Milan's underpants' joke.
27:08 - A Valley girl is the stereotypical annoying, nasal teenage California girl.
27:11 - 'once she gets pumped it's hard to make the body stop' from Michelle. Help?
27:59 - Lady Chaderley is a play on Lady Chatterley, an erotic novel scandalous for its time.
28:00 - The World According to Paris was a reality show starring Paris Hilton.
28:33 - In the movie 'There's Something About Mary', an iconic scene is about sperm being used as hair gel in a fashion loosely similar to The Princess's hairdo.
28:40 - Telemundo is a TV station with programming targeted at Hispanics.
28:58 - Crown Royal is a Canadian brand of whisky.
29:02 - 'Feeling good, looking gorgeous' is a RuPaul song.
29:08 - It's the 2nd time of the episode RuPaul uses the line 'she wants her old body back'.
29:14 - RuPaul and Michelle's are referring to Starr Jones's then-husband, who was rumored to be gay.
29:30 - Interestingly enough, 'Sugar Wall' will be the name of Willam's magazine in Ep. 7.
29:34 - Toddlers and Tiaras is a show about child pageants on TLC.
29:36 - Tanya Tucker is a singer for who success struck when she was only 13. It's also a pun on 'tucking', that is hiding your male genitalia.
30:11 - Smackdown is a name often used for WWE's specials.
31:42 - Carrie Bradshaw is the main character from the show Sex and the City.
32:20 - 'May I call you Jigggly' is Ru baiting for Jiggly to answer 'Of course you can, everybody does!' like Bubbles deVere in the show Little Britain.
33:24 - You get balls on your chin when you perform a blowjob. Well, if you do your job correctly...
33:34 - Luther Vandross was a singer known partly for his many collaborations with Diana Ross, Bette Middler, Chaka Khan and the likes.
34:00 - Biggie Smalls and Lil Kim where childhood friends and, at times, lovers. Anyone can expand on that? I'm clueless when it comes to rap.
34:16 - Shaquille O'Neal is a (very tall) basketball player.
34:24 - Billy B's 'You had me at splat' is a reference to 'You had me at hello' from the movie Jerry Maguire.
37:45 - P!nk is a singer mostly known for her 'rebel' look and attitude.
38:10 - Willam's 'Bye' is explained at length here¸
41:23 - 'Some of these girls are 40 and 50' Chad was the oldest of the cast and was 40 at time of filming.
UNTUCKED
04:00 - Sharon may have a point there, as Jiggy has since come out as transgender.
04:10 - Alaska Thunderfuck appeared later on Season 5 as a contestant.
06:30 - Unlike other seasons, the pink box isn't furry.
I'LL GLADLY EDIT IN YOUR PERTINENT CONTRIBUTIONS TO THE POST AS YOU SCHOOL ME. Come on Ruclopedia, let's get pop culture researchin'!

2015.01.23 23:22 Ohmstar [Character Spotlight] The Feline Fatale, Catwoman!

Catwoman, the Feline Fatale. She has been a villain, a hero, and everything in between. She has been a love interest for Batman, and his eternal source of frustration. Through it all, she has been a character that draws the hearts and minds of all who read her adventures.
NOTE: The dates used below are the Cover Dates which are printed on the issues, not the release dates. Release date is typically two months ahead of Cover date (ex., November 2011 issues were released in September 2011).
Facts
Real Name: Selina Kyle
First Appearance: Batman #01 (Spring 1940)
First New 52 Appearance: Catwoman #01 (November 2011)
Created By: Bill Finger and Bob Kane
Aliases/Alternate Identities: The Cat, Irena Dubrovna
Pre-Crisis on Infinite Earths
Selina Kyle made her first appearance in Batman #01 in Spring of 1940. She was known simply as "The Cat" at the time (not Selina or Catwoman). While she may not have had what would become her name, she definitely had the personality; she was a femme fatale who both attracted and antagonized Batman. In Batman #02 (Summer 1940), she is referred to as Cat-Woman (and sometimes just The Cat). In Batman #03 (Fall 1940), she returns once again; this time, wearing a furry cat mask. She wore this mask over her next few appearances, always with a different outfit. It wasn't until Batman #35 (June/July 1946) that Catwoman started wearing a mask more akin to what we're used to in the modern age.
In Batman #62 (December 1949/January 1950), we learn Catwoman's true identity for the first time. Selina Kyle was a former flight attendant who got amnesia. During her amnesiac state, she became a criminal, the Cat-Woman. In Batman #62, she hits her head trying to rescue Batman, recovers her memories, and vows to stop being a criminal (it's later revealed, in Brave and the Bold #197 (April 1983), that she made the amnesia story up to escape her criminal lifestyle). Catwoman helps Batman and Robin prevent crimes only a couple of times before returning to her life of crime in January 1954's Detective Comics #203. Detective Comics #211 (September 1954) would be her final appearance until the late 1960s, due to the Comics Code Authority's rules on depictions of women.
Catwoman's return appearance was in Superman's Girl Friend, Lois Lane #70 (November 1966), where she turns Superman into a cat. This continues to be the main universe version of Catwoman until Batman: Year One. In 1977, we are introduced to Earth-2 Catwoman, Selina Kyle-Wayne (DC Super-Stars #17 from NovembeDecember 1977).
Post-Crisis on Infinite Earths
In Frank Miller and David Mazzucchelli's Batman: Year One story (Batman #404-407), we are introduced to the modern version of Selina Kyle: a prostitute/dominatrix who is inspired by Batman to don a costume and, you know, steal things. Selina's origin was expanded in the four-issue Catwoman (1989) mini-series, titled Her Sister's Keeper. Her Sister's Keeper introduces Selina's sister Maggie, who is a nun, as well as the fact that Selina was trained to fight by Ted Grant (Wildcat).
In August 1993, the first long-running Catwoman series started. Selina was depicted as an international thief and bounty hunter who played by her own rules. This series ran for 94 regular issues (ending in July 2001), four annuals, a zero issue, and an issue 1,000,000.
The following month, August 2001, Catwoman became the focus of The Trail of the Catwoman, a backup story in Detective Comics issues #759-762, written by Ed Brubaker and drawn by Darwyn Cooke. These led directly into Catwoman's second running series, which started in January 2002. In July 2002, Darwyn Cooke released Catwoman: Selina's Big Score, an original graphic novel that fills in the gap between the end of Catwoman 1993 and the beginning of Catwoman 2002. We see the motivation for Selina's reformation into a hero (of sorts). Selina's 2002 series takes a lot of inspiration from crime noir. Selina has turned over a new leaf, and is now the protector of Gotham's East End (though she is still a master thief). This series ran for 82 regular issues (ending October 2008), and one bonus issue, the Blackest Night tie-in issue #83.
We next see Selina in the fantastic Batman: Heart of Hush story arc (Detective Comics 846-850). This story arc, by Paul Dini and Dustin Nguyen, sets up a new rivalry between Selina and Batman villain Hush. This rivalry is furthered in the Faces of Evil story arc (Detective Comics #852 and Batman #685), which leads directly into the ever popular Gotham City Sirens, Selina's final starring book (co-starring with Harley Quinn and Poison Ivy) before the start of the New 52.
The New 52
This is where Catwoman gets really unfortunate. Issues 01-12 were written by Judd Winick. In his run, he managed to make the book all about how to get Selina undressed as often as possible. He got rid of the strong, take-charge, self-sufficient Selina and replaced her with a kind of dumb version of herself that needed men to come and save her. After issue 12, Winick left.
Then, Ann Nocenti took over with the 0 issue, and wrote issues 13-24, 26-28, 30-34, and annual 01. Her Catwoman was nothing short of idiotic. She bumbled around from place to place without a legitimate reason for doing so (it was always some silly so-obvious-it's-stupid excuse). The stories were poorly written, and characters changed personalities between issues. A couple of times, characters would start acting completely different across pages of a single issue. It relied on cheap sensationalism with absolutely no substance to back it up. And, it was just as ridiculously oversexualized as it had been by Judd Winick.
Issue 25 was the Batman: Zero Year tie-in, and was written by John Layman. It was an adequate story, though there were one too many cat-jokes for my tastes.
Issue 29 was just a random fill-in issue. It was written by Sholly Fisch. It was not incredible, but it was also perfectly adequate. Fisch is mostly known for children's titles, but I thought he did pretty well on Catwoman. Fisch also wrote the Catwoman: Futures End issue. Like all of the Futures End issues, it was pretty heavily weighed down by the Futures End story, so the book didn't really have a chance to shine. Still, it was fun.
The current Catwoman, written by Genevieve Valentine, is fine. She's just in her first story arc (she took over at issue 35), but has been progressing well. I have hopes for the future. But almost all of the previous issues of Catwoman since the beginning on the New 52 have been garbage in one way or another.
Basically, New 52 Catwoman amounts to 3 readable issues (25, 29, and Futures End), 4 pretty good/promising issues (35-37 and annual 2), and 34 issues of absolute unreadable garbage.

Gallery of Comic Costumes. This is far from complete, and largely ignores alternate continuities, Elseworlds, and the like. But it's a nice sample of the many costumes Selina has had over the years.

  • When in Rome - A spin-off from Batman: The Long Halloween and Dark Victory starring Catwoman.

Questions Answers
Sarah, I know you're on the forefront of the movement to pass the bill to make it illegal for paparazzi to photograph celebrity children without the parents permission. how do you feel that so many major tabloids such as Just Jared, E! and People are on board? There are no words to put how grateful I am to JustJared, to People, and to everyone who is joining this movement. Kristen Bell is so incredible because we needed a leader, and she is making the world a safer place for my daughter. My poor daughter is petrified of cameras and doesn't even like taking photos at home because she is scared of large men putting cameras in her face, so the fact that we are getting the support that we are is incredible. I would also like to take this chance to thank the fans who are supporting me by not buying the magazines and not watching the shows that refused to be a part of this. And also to the rockstar Kristen Bell who not only is a heroine, but also kind of my heroine right now.
What was your favorite Buffy episode to work on? I have a few, so bear with me.
I am in a room full of Buffy fans and everyone is yelling out their favorite episodes!
My first one is The Prom because I just love that whole story, and I thought it just encapsulated the show so well. It was beautiful and heartbreaking.
I also love Hush because I think it's not just the scariest episode we've ever done but the challenge to do a silent episode - I thought it would be easy but it was way harder.
And the other favorite I love is The Body, because it was beyond difficult and heart wrenching to shoot, and I don't know if many people know this, but my entire first scene was all done in one take. It was 4-5 minutes of one long take.
There was an episode of the Crazy Ones where you drew two perfect circles. Not just good circles, perfect. I must have watched it 10+ times trying to figure out what was going on. How did you accomplish such a feat? Were there grooves in the whiteboard? Was it CG? Do you actually have a superhuman ability? The true magician will never reveal her secrets.
Sarah, if you awoke tomorrow to discover you were Bruce Willis, what's the first thing you would do? Oh my god, that's so easy! I would just walk around all day yelling "Yippee-Ki-Yay Motherfucker!"
Easy.
How many times did you accidentally stab yourself on the set of Buffy? Oh please?!? How many times do I hurt myself getting out of bed? For a pretty graceful person I'm a klutz.
What did James Marsters' hair feel like? Ha! Well at the time on Buffy, over-processed. As any woman knows what it's like.
How did David Boreanaz smell? I can say that David honestly smells very good and continues to smell very good. I apologize to Jamie his wife for answering that question.
I remember reading that you’re a rare book collector. What are some of your favorite volumes? My favorite collection that I still am in the process of working on is eventually I want to own every first-edition Dr. Seuss.
Also, do you have any thoughts on the Buffyverse including a male slayer in season nine? And also my first edition Harry Potters.
*Seeing as Joss Whedon is the current master of the Marvel Universe, if he was to offer you a superhero role that hasn't been filled yet, which one would you love to tackle? He already gave me the best superbero I could ever ask for.
*Was there ever a role amongst the many rumored and discussed that you wish you had taken? Had you hoped for the rumored Wonder Woman role 10 years ago? You know, that rumor went around a lot, but Wonder Woman was an Amazon, and due to the fact that I am - shall we say - vertically challenged, it would not have been a good role for me.
Hi Sarah! Thanks for taking the time to do this. If you had to fight Eliza Dushku in real life do you think you could take her? I hopefully would not have to fight Eliza, because I like her and consider her a friend. Way more friend than foe. But if we were playing dodgeball, I would definitely pick her first for my team.
Hi Sarah, what is the weirder experience you've had while meeting a fan ? It's never weird. It's usually a really exciting experience, except when it happens in the bathroom. I prefer it not to happen there.
Spike or Angel? ANGEL.
Dear god, I love you so much. I'm rewatching Buffy for the 10th or so time right now. What was your favorite "big bad" throughout the series? Ohhh! I loved a couple. When Angel turned bad. Physically I think the scariest were the guys from Hush. And also Camden Toy, I can't think of his character's name right now. And I also liked it when I was the bad guy. And while we're on this topic, I remember my other favorite episode, even though no one asked: I also liked the body switching episode where I got to play Faith and Faith got to play Buffy.
off Sarah, I want to thank you for your time on Buffy. The show and in particular your character got me through some VERY difficult times. It first came on when I was in middle school and it stayed with me through my first year of college. It made the biggest impact on my life any show will ever have. I really enjoy The Crazy Ones, and I think you and Robin Williams’ chemistry is great. 2) The picture of you, Michelle Trachtenberg and Seth Green you posted on twitter has set off a flurry of rumors about a Sunnydale mini-reunion on The Crazy Ones. Which former costar would you most want to work with again? Oh my goodness, I think the person I am most angling to get on the Crazy Ones is Seth Green. And I will say this: he makes a surprise cameo in an upcoming episode, but I want to get him on for reals.
Sarah, thank you so much for stopping in and saying “hi” to us fanguys/girls. It has been such fun to watch your career progress, and I will of course thank you for all the hard work you put in on “Buffy”…that show means so much to so many people. My question is of a personal nature. You and your husband seem to have a very solid relationship (long-term, out of the limelight, etc.), particularly for a “Hollywood” couple. What kind of steps do you take to make sure your relationship stays private? What kind of perspective are your children growing up with, in regards to the film industry? Well I think the reason I've been able to lead such a private life is because I've never flaunted my private life, my fans have respected that. And it makes me able to give more to my professional life, because I have a whole separate life at home. And I'm trying to give my kids as much of a regular life and understanding of the world as I can.
Love the new show and excited for its return tonight. It’s so perfectly cast! Here’s a question: What’s Robin Williams like off camera--is he always “on?” NO. That's the funny thing. Is that he's such a down to earth person that sometimes you have to ask him to turn it on!
Star Wars or Star Trek? UM EXCUSE ME MY HUSBAND IS A JEDI.
Thank you for doing this for your fans! Is it Gell-err or Gell-ar? Depends who's pronouncing it! But I pronounce it Prinze.
What's your favorite song at the moment? Let it Go from Frozen. That and I hear Wicked all day long every day because my daughter is obsessed. And any song Auntie Kristin sings is good by her.
Buffy on Broadway. Yea or Nay? As long as Kristin Chenoweth plays me...
Who would win in a fight, a caveman or an astronaut? You had this opportunity to ask me a question and that's your question?
Answer: Bruce Lee.
Sarah, if you could create an alcoholic drink based on anything in the Buffyverse, what would you call it and what would be the ingredients? A fruit punch mouth! And what's in it? A red punch with rum.
There are obviously a lot of people, including myself, who the character of Buffy Summers means a lot to, but could you maybe explain what she means to you? You know the same way the audience grew up with her? I grew up with her too. She'll always be a part of me.
Is Alyson Hannigan as cool in person as she looks in the show? They all were. That's what was so great about the show. Everybody was so unique and brought so much personally and professionally. And she's pretty funny.
I thought I'd have all these questions, now I just want to say: you defined an entire generation. Not just with Buffy, but with Cruel Intentions. Also, what's your fav ice cream? I'm not a big ice cream person, but I love salted caramel ice-cream from Rose Creamery. If anyone wants to send some to me…I'm available to eat it.
Can you sum up your Buffy years, in five words or less? It was 8 incredible years of making incredible television. It would take 5 HOURS to do it justice.
Also, is Robin Williams as good looking in person as he is on TV? Forget good looking. He is the kindest, most incredible human being. You want to talk about a superhero? He's it.
Who was a better kisser, Angel or Spike? P.S. any answer other than Spike will be incorrect, but I need you to confirm. I'm sorry to disappoint. And again my apologies to Jamie.
Who encouraged you the most throughout your career? Well I would say there are probably 3 people who've encouraged me the most. The first is my mother, who taught me to follow my dreams. My husband and family for making my dreams come true. And my long-time agent and manager, who's been with me since I was a child and has always believed in me. And David my makeup artist because he's sitting next to me and has been with me for 17 years! I hear him choking because I forgot to mention him, and now he's laughing. David DeLeon makeup.
If you could work with any actor, that you have not worked with already, who would it be? Ricky Gervais! And you know what I want too? I'm obsessed with Gary Shandling and his show. I want to get him on our show.
Sarah - if you could have been in any other Joss show besides Buffy which one would it be? There's another Joss show for me besides Buffy?!?
Hey Sarah, huge fan! Would you ever consider doing anything with Buffy the Vampire slayer franchise again? I feel like I still do? I don't think you ever leave that franchise.
Helo Sarah ! What's your favourite pizza? Mushroom! With extra cheese. Thin crust. New York style.
Which TV show would you like to see do a musical episode? NOT the Crazy Ones!
Settle a debate going on over at buffy right now. Angel or Spike? Still Angel.
Veronika Decides to Die is actually one of my favorite films you've done. How much prep did it take to get into character as Veronika and what was the most challenging aspect of filming that? I think the biggest challenge was doing the book justice. Because it's such a beautiful piece of art.
What three things would you take if you were stranded on a desert island? My husband, my daughter and my son. I guess I'd have to leave my dog to someone.
If you could make any book into a movie or television show, what would it be? It's hard for me because books live so much in my imagination that sometimes I like them to stay there. But I would love to see the Secret History.
How many vampires do you slay per day? I wonder if there's a tally out? Did anyone ever do a tally?
I'll tell you that - the first person who tweets at me with the total number of vampires I killed across 7 seasons gets a prize.
If you could have any superpower, what would it be? Invisibility would be really cool. But I want to fly too. Is that greedy?
Sarah! I'm a huge Buffy fan, thank you so much for all your work. My question, do you have any memorabilia from the show that people wouldn't expect? Aside from her wardrobe? I think my favorite is that my makeup artist had made a special stake for me with a little bottle of holy water, and to this day I keep it by my bed.
I was just wondering if you prefer doing comedy or drama, and which you find more challenging. Playing Bridget/Siobhan must be so different from playing Sydney, so which do you enjoy more, and why? I think at different times of my life i've enjoyed different experiences. As a mother of two, doing comedy and being funny and making people laugh is what I'm enjoying doing right now. I could never have the energy or the body strength to do Buffy right now! But I love being able to do all the different genres.
Also, can I have James Wolk's phone number? If not, just tell him I say hi. Oh yea, you can totally have James' phone number! Wait, I'm very tempted to actually give it out. But I will totally tell him you say hello.
How was your role in Call Of The Dead in Call of duty? SO Much fun.
I was the first female playable character in that game! Pretty awesome.
What is your favorite screwball comedy? Showgirls.
I know that Alyson was known for pranking everybody on the set, were you ever the victim? No I think I was more her co-conspirator.
In the true spirit of Buffy? What is your favourite horror movie? I know what you did last summer and Scream 2! And The Grudge.
But I'm not biased. ;)
Hi Sarah, what's one little thing you love doing in your everyday life ? Getting my coffee.
I get excited at night just thinking about the coffee I am going to have in the morning.
What do you think about the new fantasy/vampire series? (Ex twilight) Also, what is your favorite food? You know, vampires - people always say to me "how do you feel about these other things copying you?" and you have to remember that vampires were around a LONG time before Buffy. I'm just glad the legend continues.
When people talk about the 90s, I always think about you, how do you feel about this? I worry that they might judge me by my hairstyles? But otherwise I'm ok with it.
I guess I should ask a question since this is an AMA. What is your favorite book of right now? It doesn’t have to be a new or current book, but the best one you have read somewhat recently. Right now, I'm very into Curtis Sittenfeld's Sisterland.
Is it hard to work with Robin Williams? It seems like the set would never stop laughing. I'm not going to lie, there is a lot of laughing. And MAYBE one person might have wet their pants. But I won't say who. Jimmy.
And I'm only kidding!
But he (Robin) has the best sense of humor.
What was it like being in the Scooby-Doo movies? It takes a lot to talk to a dog that's not there. I really used my acting chops on that one.
I have a funny anecdote about that. When I was doing Scooby Doo 1, I got to train with a famous Hong Kong wire team. It was great, but they always referred to me as "blond girl" which was very confusing because I had a red wig.
And they would call my other stunt girl "Other blond girl."
Coke or Pepsi? Coke Zero. But my children do not drink it. It's all for me. My children only drink scotch from their sippy cup. ;)
Who's your favorite Pokémon? What's a Pokemon?
Ooh, second question - what's a guilty musical pleasure of yours? What'd embarrass you most on your mp3 player? I have no guilty pleasures. I am proud of ALL music.
I have love for Miley. I'll admit it. I'm out and proud. There I said it.
If you had to fight 100 Buffies the size of that fear demon from "Fear, Itself" or one Buffy sized fear demon, which would you choose? A Buffy-sized fear demon, because he didn't have much to offer. Even a tiny Buffy kicks ass.
Since there's a Mork & Mindy reunion on The Crazy Ones, is there a show you love that you would love to see a reunion of? Murphy Brown. Hands down. That's like one of my favorite shows of all time.
And also a Boston Legal one on the Crazy Ones if it involves William Shatner and James Spader!
Have you ever read any of the millions of BtVS fanfics that are scattered across the web? How bad/disturbing was it? I have. And it's pretty incredible. And it's really moving when people take the time to do that kind of thing.
Question for SMP: do you think you should maybe order a pizza for your friends sitting in the trailer with you right now? The answer is: yes, as soon as I finish this awesome reddit.
What is your greatest fear? I try not to let fear control me. I get excited by the unknown and unexpected.
Also, birds.
Especially pigeons.
What are your thoughts on peanut butter cups? LOVE 'EM! Positive. All for 'em. Especially in the freezer. I like the mini ones better because I feel like I'm getting away with something.
Hi sarah! First off you are my queen! My question is what was it like for you when you finished filming buffy? It was kind of shocking. I didn't get much of a chance to process because the day that I wrapped I left for Vancouver on a movie. So I didn't deal with the loss until about a year later.
Will you let your kids watch Buffy when they're older or is it weird for you/them to see you on screen? That's an interesting question. I don't think I'm ready to tackle the thought of them watching. I mean, right now my daughter doesn't even want to watch me on Sesame Street, so I'm going to have to think about that one. Come back to me in a few years.
Let's say Buffy wakes up one day and all the evil is gone, what career does she head into? She could be a counselor and go back to working at Sunnydale High? And I'm terrible at slinging burgers, so I wouldn't go back to that. Plus that AWFUL hat they made her wear.
I have always wondered, if you didn't become an actress, what career do you think you might've chosen? I would have hoped to have been Diane Sawyer's replacement sometime. Not that anyone could replace her, but I would have hoped to follow in her footsteps.
If you were a muppet, which one would you be? Miss Piggy! She gets all the great wardrobe. AND she knows Joan Rivers.
Are you a video gamer? I like a good video game, yes. You know, I appreciate a good video game. I don't have the time in my life to play them, but I do appreciate them.
You are my hero Sarah! I'm going to try my best not to turn into fanboy, so I'll just get right to my question! I have SO many. I was actually just talking about them on my twitter the other day. Pretty much anything Dr. Seuss ever said, but I have one more. "You taught me baby. How the few who win acquire. What their hearts desire. It ain't practice, it ain't skill. They'll help but not as much as wanting will."
What is a quote that you live by, or that inspires you? It's from a musical.
What is the most ridiculous tabloid rumour you have heard about yourself? Also, thank you for taking the time and being an inspiration to women like myself :) Normally I don't read them, but there was a really weird story once about me pulling a hamstring in my butt, it was actually my costumer (who was also named Sarah).
My girlfriend is a big fan! Could you say hello to her? Also, what's your favourite sandwich filling? Burrata.
What television are you currently following? Right now I'm an HGTV addict. I LOVE Househunters international!
Did you have any clue where "Ringer" was heading before it's cancellation? possibly…
What is your dream travel destination? The Maldives and the Seychelles. I've already to been to Tokyo and Tanzania which were also on my list.
What is something that you would recommend everyone experience, at least once in their life? An episode of The Crazy Ones. That and a good burrata sandwich.
Favorite pancake topping? Well, my daughter likes chocolate chip with whipped cream. I'm not a big pancake person, but I make those a lot.
How do you like your coffee? It depends on the day. Light milk, a little Truvia.
The WB or The CW? (as if there's even an option) WB when Buffy was on it. CW now.
Hi Sarah! I was just wondering, if you had the opportunity to star as any woman from history, who would you choose? Neely O'Hara from Valley of the Dolls.
If somebody told pre-All My Children you that you would play one of the most beloved characters on television and going on to work with Robin Williams, what would you of said? My life is looking good. I truly believe anything is possible.
Which do you prefer: Mad Men or Breaking Bad? Mad Men, because it has Jimmy Wolk and Linda Cardelini.
I've always wondered what actors do with their Teen Choice Awards. Where do you and Freddie keep yours? I can never reveal my secret.
Will you ever do a horroThriller movie ever again? Sure! Why not?
Tell us what you did last summer. Killed a drifter on the road.
How is your day going :) My day? well, with mercury in retrograde it didn't out so great. I spilled my cold medicine all over my car which I had just gotten detailed. Then I locked my keys in a place in the car where keys go and are never found again. But now I'm getting to spend my day with fans so it's getting better.
I just wanted to say that Buffy has been a source of bonding among my father, brother, and I (much to the dismay of my mother). We all love strong women and really respected the way you portrayed growth and maturation all while being bad ass. No question here, but you're amazing. What's wrong with your mom? Why doesn't she watch Buffy?
This is my cat, Buffy: Link to i.imgur.com. I catch a lot of flack for naming the cat Buffy, and get called lame, but I just liked you so much, I had to have a Buffy of my own. By the way, a lot of people have animals named Buffy and it's a very good animal name and I stand behind that.

Questions Answers
What was your favorite experience working on the set of Supernatural and Breaking Bad? I love doing Supernatural so much, its hard to pick a favorite experience. I loved the episode where we were chasing the monster you could only see when you're drunk. Playing drunk and actually being drunk in a couple of scenes was fun. I liked souther comfort because Jared and I had so many scenes together for the first time.
Breaking Bad, Im really proud of that episode. It was a 6 minute cold open with no cuts. Doing that scene was a dance. We wanted to audience to think I was a cop, then doubt it, then think it, then doubt it...The New York Times rated it one of the 10 best moments of the series. That made me really happy.
Dude, we're fighting demons and shit. You're doing a damn AMA??!! Funny!
Was it hard transitioning from spinning records to acting? That is a popular misconception. DJ is my actual name. Ive never spun a record. Ive been an actor for 13 years and people still think that I used to or still do spin.
The New Guy was a hilarious flick. What is the vibe of the set when working on a teen sex film? The New Guy really wasn't a teen sex film. No one has sex in the movie. Its more an anti-bullying/bully revenge movie. I did it because I was bullied mercilessly in school. I used to think about killing myself often in my teen years to escape it, that's how bad it got. Thank God Im afraid of pain or Id be a goner. I did The New Guy to exorcize some of those demons and to give others who are bullied 90 minutes of escape and fantasy. And, because they offered it to me, it was a lead in a major motion picture and they paid me a crap load for it.
I remember an old interview you did, you said the other cast members were making fun of your beater car, like you weren't allowed to drive a beater when you're the lead in a film. Just curious, what car(s) do you drive now, after a decade plus in the industry? I have an 11 year old Mercedes. It only has 43K miles on it because most of my work has been on location. When it was 10 years old, I started putting aside what a monthly car payment would be. I use that money to buy art. I recently bought my first Warhol. Its smarter than spending your money on a flashy new car. A car is a huge part of your image in LA. That is something I choose not to involve myself in. I will drive that car until the wheels fall off, then hopefully buy another and drive that until it dies.
You are so chill and down to earth, I bet you are a lot of fun just to hang out with. If I ever meet you can we go to the pub and grab a few beers? On me. Deal.
What kind of diet are you on to keep that amazing figure? And. What do you think happened to your character on LOST after the series finale? Im on the childhood cancer diet. The chemo I was on sped up my metabolism. Also, I had it during a time when my bones were growing. They lengthened, but never widened. I have the frame of a very tall 14 year old boy. As far as Lost goes, I was working on another show when they ended. Also, I wasn't asked.
Ah. I do believe I'll be reading people's wikipedia before asking such questions in jest from now on. Thanks for the honest answer, in any case! Lol. No worries! Thanks for the question.
Childhood cancer has such weird ways of effecting the body. My roommate had cancer when he was a teen and because of that he has a short torso. He's got the arms and legs of a 6' tall man but he's only like 5'7" This is a pretty common thing. Chemo cannot tell what's a good fast growing cell and what a bad one, so it kills them all.
What is Vanilla Ice like? I think he prefers Rob VanWinkle. He was in a kinda angry place when I met him, which I totally understand. Ice, Ice, Baby was years ago and he's tried to get away from it to do new things. Its been a struggle for him. I had to fight singing the song when I was around him, though. It just kept popping into my brain to hum or whistle it. I cant remember, but I think I was able to contain myself.
I would have played under pressure. That would have been way too much to resist. That's what I was humming.
It's not cheating because it's your dog :) You know? Because it's your dog. We get it.. Its amazing how much Ive heard that. If I said it never got old, Id be telling a 12 year old lie. Road Trip started my career and it occupies a soft spot in my heart, always will. That said, I have a love/hate situation with that line. I hear it less now, but for like 5 YEARS after the movie was out I heard it at least once every time I was interacting with strangers in a public place.
Well that's because the delivery was too perfect! I can hear your voice in my head because of that, it sticks man! That made me laugh! Thanks for that!
Hi DJ! Thanks for doing this! You've been involved in some pretty epic shows like Breaking Bad and Lost. Out of all the projects you've been involved in, which one has been your favorite? Was there any particular one that you did not enjoy working on? I liked All About Steve, too. Im not really sure why the critics went after it like they did. Oh well. Favorite TV show is honestly Legit. I have freedom like Ive never had on any other show and I really love the cast and crew. Supernatural is next on the list because its turned into such a thing in my life.
hey, I actually liked All About Steve. Ill be honest with you, there are two times when I didnt have a good time on a show. I didnt have fun on Big Bang Theory. I liked the people, but a sitcom format was something Id never done before. Im from the single camera world. It was tough to adjust to it. Im a perfectionist and I white knuckled that whole experience. If I did it again, Id probably have a different outlook. The other was Numbers. I did an episode of that show. I cant remember why I did it. I didnt like the character. I must have been bored and ready to work. That happens sometimes. There was also an actor on that show that made it less fun. It wasn't David Krumholtz.
Thanks for your answers! I appreciate your honesty. I have to admit I haven't seen Legit yet, I don't have cable. Next time I'm at my girlfriends place I'll make sure to check it out. This made my day! Thanks again! Its on Hulu and the FX website for free. Check it out.
DJ - What is your favorite vegetable? Im a big fan of the artichoke. No wait, corn on the cob is my favorite, Then potato, then, artichoke.
No wait, Okra. Fried Okra I could eat all day long. Okra, then COLLARD GREENS, then corn on the cob, then potato, then artichoke heart.
This must be your secret to looking permanently 21, I don't think you've aged a day since The New Guy. I love you right now! Its actually a combination of genetics and dermatology. I take really good care of my skin. SPF 30 every day, alternate a non foaming cleanser and a mild scrub and once a year, I get a little injectable filler in my smile lines. Thin people get serious smile lines at an early age, so I have mine fixed.
How's that for AMA honesty?
Hey DJ Qualls, thanks for doing this AMA I love your work on Supernatural, and I want to know what it's like working with Jared and Jensen? Thankyou! They are like your bratty brothers. They tease you, fart all the time, but they love you deep down.
Hey there, DJ! Just wanted to ask you what your dream role would be if you were ever given the opportunity to perform it? I just heard they are making a movie of Good Times. I would like to play JJ, but Im not black.
In the real world, I would like to play Billy Bibbit in One Flew over the Cuckoo's Nest on Broadway or the West End. I had an offer to do it in London in 2005, but a mistake in my work permit killed the deal. It broke my heart. Its one of the few times Ive cried about something work related.
You always seem to do your best to stay in touch with your fans, especially on Twitter. Have you/would you ever date one? Thanks for noticing. Yeah, I pride myself on doing my best to respond to fans. If they take the time to reach out to me, I feel I owe them at least an acknowledgement. Dating a fan? I've never done it, but never say never. A fan is just a person who likes your work, that you haven't met yet.
Loved you as "Rat" in "The Core". Was it hard to be so emotional toward the end of the movie or were your really caught up in the frustration of your character? Thanks. That movie is special for me because I met Alfre Woodard during filming. She and I have remained close for over a decade. As far as the emotional stuff in the film, I actually find crying and those types of extreme emotions easier to play. If you connect into a situation, and imagine how you would feel if it were really happening, it just kind of pours out. I actually have to fight to control it. Comedy is SO much harder than drama. It puzzles me why dramatic actors are praised on a higher plane than those known for comedy.
Has sitting in a wheelchair all day not moving affected your body in any way? Sitting a wheelchair hasn't impacted my body in anyway. I sit on the couch all day when Im off work. Its similar except I can scratch my balls when they itch when Im on the couch. I cant move my arms when the camera is rolling. That is hard for me. Im an arm talker.
Loved you as Leo on Big Bang Theory as well as The New Guy. Is Eliza Dushku as hot in person as she looks? Thanks! Yes, Eliza is a natural beauty. She's also really fun to drink with.
Gilligan's Island the remake! how about it? it could be huge. Im in. Id make Gilligan a little smarter, though. Id also like him to be gay. There were no gays on the island. Id also make Marianne black. The professor could be Asian, but I dont know if that is racist.
Can we ever expect a Road Trip 2? Lol. I don't think so. I think the Hangover movies picked up where we left off. I owe Todd Phillips a lot, though. He started my career. He found me at a local audition in Atlanta and plucked me out of obscurity and pushed me into slightly less obscurity.
Hi DJ! Why did you decide to become an actor? And how did you get into the business? TIA! I became an actor because from an early age, maybe around 6 years old, its all I wanted to do. If I couldn't do that, I wanted to live in New York City and work for a newspaper like Clark Kent and Peter Parker.
I got into the business by auditioning for a one line part in the movie Road Trip. The director, Todd Philips saw something in me and asked me to read for a lead role. I got it and it changed my life. It was a lucky break, but years went into that break. I sharpened my skills for years in local theater. If I wasnt ready when I got the opportunity, it wouldnt have happened.
Im also a FIRM believer in saying what you want to happen out loud. I did it to become a working actor and I still do it today. I also say out loud when Im thankful or afraid or happy... Im not sure what it does, maybe it focuses you, but that really works for me.
Yeah DJ!!! Ok my question is if you are coming back to Supernatural, would Mr.Fizzles potentially be coming back??? I have no idea about Garth's or Mr. Fizzles' future on SPN. You'd have to ask a producer. As far as it changing my life, yes it has changed things. Cult fandom and fame is different than what I'd experience prior to being on the show. People seem to cry easier in my presence, which is sweet, but freaks me out a little. People call me Garth instead of my name. Brazilians seem especially confused when I dont have 8 cell phones and dont drive and El Camino.
Also, has SPN changed your life in anyway?? I just answered this, but will do it again, just for you. I have no idea when Garth will return to SPN. Mr. Fizzles is in a drawer in my nightstand. He's on standby also.
What's it like working with Mr. Fizzle? Mr. Fizzles is my hand, so Id say its pretty easy. I have a lot of experience working with my hand.
Is Legit going to have a second season? We should know very soon about Legit getting a second season. Its looking good. Keep watching. We need you.
DJ you are one of my idles!! How is it working with jim jeffries?? Thanks! I love Jim to pieces. He and I have become good friends. I couldnt have predicted that. I turned down Legit initially because I felt like I couldnt be vulnerable around Jim. I thought he was the guy from his stand up. He also didnt make eye contact with me when I read with him for the pilot. I was proved wrong, though. He's a really caring guy. He can also be a total asshole, but I overlook that. When he's going at me, I just say "You can't hurt me, Jim." It works for me.
Are you a former model for such designers as Calvin Klein and Prada? Probably before you were born and before gravity started pulling at my body. When looking like you did drugs (but didn't) was fashionable. When people woke up and realized that acid washed jeans were terrible and when TLC and Salt n Pepa were on the radio. Yes.
Do you have any "first day on set" things that you like to do? And what do you do as you're reading through a script for the first tim? My first day on set, Im always nervous, especially if Im guesting on someone else's show. When its my show, like Legit or when Im made to feel like a regular, Supernatural, Im very relaxed. I do my best work when Im relaxed because it makes me feel free to explore and find moments.
Obligatory 'love you on Supernatural' comment! When Im reading through a script, it sort of sounds like music in my head. I can hear the cadence of the dialogue. If that doesnt happen, I usually ask my management if its bad or Im crazy. It's usually bad material. I think my instincts are decent, but Im not always correct.
What the hell happened to memphis beat? I really enjoy your work bro. Good question. Ill be honest with you. Memphis Beat got the ax because one of our actors wasn't happy. Our ratings were good, but not high enough for TNT to justify bringing the show back in light of some complications behind the scenes. It was a great time in my life and introduced me to my second home, New Orleans. For that, I will always be grateful. I also got to work with one of my dearest friends, Alfre Woodard.
Hey DJ! You excited to come back to England for Asylum 10? It'll be great to see you again. I cant wait to get back to England. Aside from the convention, which is a blast, I lived there for 6 years. Its like a mini homecoming. I get to see old friends, eat foods that I miss, and visit old hangouts.
Hey DJ! I know this happens all the time - what's your favorite project you were involved in that never went to screen? Ive never had a project that wasn't made or a pilot that didnt air. Ive had a couple of movies that went straight to DVD, but I knew they werent great. I take projects based on a number of factors. Do I like it? Are the people interesting? Is the location somewhere I want to go? Does it pay well? If it doesnt pay well, will there be any upside to doing it like creative freedom or a chance to try a new kind of character?
I can say this, I learn something on every single job I've taken. Even the ones that dont turn out the way I would have liked have a place in my development as an actor and a man. I think that's true for anyone. We are basically a sum of our experiences and how we chose to interpret those experiences.
What was your favorite role to play for a TV series you appeared on? Its 100% my character on Legit. I get to really explore some great stuff with him. The character has movement limitations so Im challenged to make my scenes interesting or compelling or funny just using my voice and facial expressions. Theres no physicality to play with.
Like when you leave the room? I always laugh when you do that. Our creator, Peter O'Fallon things he made that up. I disagree. It was something we found in the room. Something that I found in the room. Peter and I will have to agree to disagree.
Favorite experience as an actor? Favorite book or movie? Favorite books. Fountain Head and East of Eden. Hands down. Movies: PeeWee's Big Adventure, The Color Purple, Rudy, Incredible Shrinking Woman...so many. Im a fan of film. Its why Im an actor.
Rather fight 100 duck sized horses or one horse sized duck? And why? Side note I really hope I get to meet you at a con one day Just so I can shake your hand. Id rather fight a horse sized duck. Ever seen a video of a gang of chihuahuas going nuts on something. Scary shit.
Hi DJ! Big fan, can't wait to meet you in New Jersey in May! My question is Supernatural related. I was just wondering if you could tell me what your favorite scene was to shoot while working on Supernatural? I loved you as Garth! <3. I like the scene where I was running from the shojo a lot. That whole sequence was fun from breaking into the brewery to getting thrown through that glass wall.
No, wait. The scene where Dean hurts my feelings about Bobby in Southern Comfort is my favorite.
What's it like working with Jim? I remember you were on Talking Shit, is Jason Auer as horrifying as he sounds? Loving Legit, thanks for the AMA! He's actually a really nice dude. They love busting his balls, and he deserves it at times. His decision making skills are not the best. He's like a pet that has some brain trauma. You still love him, even when he pisses on the floor.
I know you like Warhol and Lautrec; do you have any other favorite painters/artists? There is a local LA artist named Shannon Crawford. He's an amazing painter. Google him. I own 3 of his pieces. Bryten Goss was, in my opinion, a modern master. He died really young. I had a chance to buy one of his paintings, didnt, and regret it. He was a really sweet guy. I met him through Danny Masterson.
I love all the old masters. Painters who worked during the late 14 to early 1600s, both celebrated and obscure. Their works speaks to me. It manages to be stoic and celebratory at the same time. There is a spirit of joy that is pushing through the constraints of the religious and social constraints of the day. Any art that does that, appeals to me.
Lautrec is probably my favorite. I was moved to tears in front of one of his painting once. Im standing there, alone, at the Art Institute of Chicago looking like a crazy person. Embarrassing.
How was working on Law & Order: CI? I really loved that episode, you were so awesome in it. Also, your character in Road Trip reminds me so much of my brother, I ugly cried about the french toast. Ugly cry is one of my favorite expressions. I really loved working on Criminal Intent. The character was pretty complicated by the TV standards of the day. Vincent D'onofrio was a treat to work with. Ive worked with him since and he's still amazing. He's also a funny, charming dude.
Hey, I loved you in Road Trip and Supernatural. I think you are a great actor! My questions are: What is your favorite color? And how do you feel when you're being asked for an autograph? Is it still weird? (I would feel totally weird.) Greetings from Holland! My favorite color to wear would be blue. Maybe red. Although, I tend to stick to blacks and greys. My favorite color to see would be like acid orange or green. I think its because my favorite flavors are orange and lime.
As a Portlander I was really sad to hear that Legit had to move after the pilot. While you were in Portland did you have any crazy experiences? Or do you have any stories? Something bat shit crazy happened in Portland that I cannot tell you. We still laugh about it today. As far as Legit moving from Portland. It was never going to shoot there. Its set in Venice and we need the beach and palm trees. We shot the pilot there so we could use the Leverage crew and facilities. FX gave us a tiny budget and we couldnt shoot the pilot in LA.
Is Craig Ferguson the best talk show host like he seems he is? What's being on his show like? He's amazing. Most of the other shows are kind of scripted. He is completely off the cuff, at least with me. We act like children when we're around each other. I love Craig. Being on the show is my comfort zone as far as talk shows go.
What sort of a role are you dying to play? I answered this earlier. Billy Bibbit in One Flew over the Cuckoo's nest on Broadway or the West End. Its my dream role. I got an offer to do it in London in 05 but some work permit complication screwed it up. Cant tell you how badly that stung. Literally 5 days before I was supposed to leave for a 3 month run, I was replaced.
Have you ever been haunted by Zak Guthrie? I dont know who that is. Is he Arlo Guthrie's father or son? Is Arlo Guthrie the person Im thinking of? I honestly dont know. I guess the answer to the question is "No."
I think I talked to my dead grandfather once. That was weird. It was before I ever tried drugs, so I think it might have actually happened.
No one, and I mean no one, can replace Bobby Singer, but I appreciate the effort. No one has replaced Bobby. He died, someone had to do his job. Period.
Real talk: Is Jim Beaver exactly like his character? And are Mischa, Jared, and Jensen as funny as DVD bloopers make them out to be? Everyone is funny. Ive hung out with Mischa socially. I like him. Jared and Jenson are pranksters. I have better onscreen chemistry with Jensen, but Jared and I have more contact off set. Jim is somewhat like Bobby because Jim is playing him. In real life, he's more quiet and has a dry sense of humor. He's also a really sweet, warm guy.
Hello! I absolutely love you in Supernatural and The New Guy! I'm sort of an EverQuest nerd so it was especially excellent seeing it referenced. Easier? Nothing is easy in the entertainment business. That a huge misconception. Getting the job is impossible. The hours are insane. The people in front of the camera and behind the scenes are crazy. The people who run the talent structure (agents, mgrs, lawyers, PUBLCIST) are crazier than we are. And, I love it all.
So, here's my question: Which is easier and/or do you enjoy more, movie films or tv episodes? I prefer TV because its more of an open ended thing. It had the potential to run for years, so you let your guard down and form relationships in a way you dont on a film. You also have more time to develop and watch your character grow and become a more human being.
Do you know your smile is amazing? Thanks! I have actually heard this frequently during my life, but I dont see it. Im not a fan of my face when Im smiling. I hope people are responding to the fact that its genuine. When I smile at something, my whole body feels it. Im kind of a joy addict.
Hi DJ! You're awesome :) I was wondering what advice you would give to aspiring actors? Thanks for the compliment. I get this question a lot. My advice for aspiring actors is to get in locally. Start out in community theater. Study film and television. Sharpen your skills where you live. Then get a local agent who can direct you to regional auditions for film and tv that are shooting near you. The parts will be small, but it will add credits to your resume and give you experience. Or you could get lucky like I did and book a lead on location. That changed my life quick.
Also, what has been your favourite moment on the SPN set so far? Thanks for doing ths! I answered that a few questions ago.
Hi DJ, thanks for chatting with us. Do you rely solely on your agent when it comes to reading scripts or do you sometimes look for material on your own on say Twitter or The Black List site for example? Everything that is submitted to my management, I see. The projects have to have some sort of financial backing or Id spend my life reading material that may not go into production. If the project isn't already "set up" Ive occasional attached myself to it, but that is rare and usually comes from established writer or new writers that show promise and have someone in the system pushing them.
Is Zach Braff as glorious in person as he is in my dreams? Also you were amazing in Hustle and Flow. I like Zach. He's always been very cool to me. Thanks, I will always love the experience of making Hustle & Flow. Taryn Manning and I became friends during that and we still hang out 6 years later.
Hi DJ! My question(s): what was your high school GPA (if you don't mind my asking)? I ask because I just got mine today, and it sucks. Also, what is your favorite kind of cake? I'm going to make you one for your birthday when it comes. I'm LOVING Legit, keep up the good work! Love, Jill. I dont remember my high school GPA. My college one was 3.6. Red velvet cake is my favorite and has always been (Im southern). Second is straight up vanilla with vanilla icing. The traditional birthday or wedding cake turns my crank. Im a cake person.
Thanks for watching Legit and keep watching.
, I think your acting on Legit is some of your best work. You seem to have stayed so grounded and down to earth. Who in your life or what situations in your life, do you contribute that to? Thank you. I agree with you. I think Legit is probably my best work to date. Its the only thing Ive ever done that doesnt pain me to watch, other than maybe Hustle & Flow. I tend to tear myself apart.
As to what keeps me grounded? Please, my friends and family look at me and treat me like anyone else walking around. I also have an innate sense of decency and humanity that keeps me connected. I look at myself as a guy with a cool job. That said, I have moments when I get a little ahead of myself. Karma usually smacks me around and I get the message.
I figured it out! But seriously can I take five seconds to tell you that I love you? Holy crap. You can take longer, if you'd like.
Do you plan to stick around here on Reddit? Jury is still out. Im kind of overwhelmed right now. Ive been doing this for 4 hours to make sure 90% get answers.
Hi DJ!! What was it like working on the Criminal Minds set? How do you feel being the VERY FIRST unsub given the show's success? I had a great time. It was the first time I ever got to play a "bad guy" and the guy was a total psychopath. That moment in television stands out to me as one of my favorite performances. Im proud of it.
Is John Hawkes your dad? If he is, the sex we have is illegal.
Is the story that Jim told on Kimmel about the actor auditioning for the part of Billy that rented the nurse and the whole nine yards about you? He mentions the actor being in previous movies and not being disabled. No, its not about me. I showed up and Jim pissed me off in the audition.I turned the show down at first. Also, Ive been pretty well known for 12 years prior to that meeting. I think he would have questioned why I showed up in a chair. Lastly, trying that hard isnt my style. It looks like you dont believe in your talent.
I remember hearing you on loveline back in the day with Adam and Drew. Did you like those guys? Was it a fun time? I did that show quite a few times back in the day. I liked Adam. I had a better relationship with Drew. Ive seen him many times over the years. He gave me some very wise and private advice early in my career that Ive never forgotten. Its wasnt about drugs. He also wrote me this amazing letter once that I still have. Great guy.
Which films are you producing/have produced? I produced two indies. Comic Book Villains and Last Day of Summer. I have a couple of other things going soon.
I think you're hilarious and have enjoyed watching you perform ever since I saw you on Road Trip and then The New Guy. I was stoked when you turned up on Supernatural, one of my favorite series, and then last night I came across your episode of Breaking Bad. Anyway, thanks for all the entertainment you've provided, keep up the good work! I'm going to check out Legit now that I know you're involved. Who's more intimidating in real life, Jared Padalecki or Jensen Ackles? Thanks! Neither one is intimidating. At all. Jensen is a little more intense and Jared is like a giant puppy. Both are easy laughers and fun guys.
I think you've left by now, but I wanted to say I'm a big fan! I loved you in Lost, what was that cast like? They're been putting Lost characters on Once Upon A Time. If you were approached, would you accept? Please say yes! I came back to finish up. Thanks. Id do Once Upon A Time because my friend Jules is the make up artist. Id love to work with her again. I met her on SPN, but she left.
I think that people with disabilities are often portrayed on tv as very one dimensional. I've really enjoyed watching Legit for several reasons. Your character Billy clearly isn't a savant or an innocent guy or an angry guy. He's comfortable in his body and he can be a nice guy or a dick depending on his mood. The show doesn't gloss over the things that come along with a physical disability such as transfers and portable urinals. The show has clearly made an effort to hire actors with disabilities. The show portrays friendships between people with and without disabilities realistically. What have you learned in the process of making this show? Thanks. Thank you so much. I went into detail about this on a couple of other threads. I appreciate that you get what we are trying to do with the character.
Hey :) Probably been asked but what sparked your interest in acting? :) Also you are awesome :D. I answered this a couple times. Look around the chat if you want.
Hey, I loved you in "the new guy". What movie did you enjoy the most? And who did you enjoy working with most? Thank you and I answered on a couple of other threads. Check them out.
